Ebb Tide

The power of the welling sea
Commands its waves adjourn
To leave instead, a quiet lee:
My tide is on the turn.

As from the winner in a race,
A sigh lifts from the brine;
The victory laurel''s in its place –
Draped in sweet design.

I look upon this tranquil sight
Of peace left from the fray;
Pulled within its mystic rite,
I am enticed to stay.

Wet rocks emerge from bleary beds
And seaweeds dress the dunes;
From a clump of grass appear the heads,
In reflection, of some loons

Each day I see a graceful gull
To a lazy pool descend
Down through a breathless, timeless lull
That's calm as my dearest friend.

I sense a final ebb at hand
Engulfed in unending mists:
I want to linger in the sand
While the flow of the tide persists.
