Biography:

Auburn- John T. Strout, 89, passed away peacefully at his home in the early morning hours of November 17th, 2023 with his granddaughter Mindy by his side, after a brief battle with lung cancer.

John was born May 7th, 1934 in Portland, ME.  After his first year of life, he spent many years in the Maine foster care system, until finding his forever family; Philip and Mildred Gordon of Mt. Vernon, ME.

John graduated from Cony High School in 1953.  After High School John enrolled into the Air Force and served four years; from 1954 to 1958.  John always said it was the best time of his life; he loved being up in the planes.

John married Connie A. Roberts, of Pembroke, Massachusetts on June 8th, 1968 and then adopted Connie’s four year old daughter Terri-Ann shortly after.  They moved to Auburn, ME and began their life together as a family.

John worked many different jobs throughout his life, but for the majority of his working years he was a painter for Ascanio Painting in Portland, Maine.  John retired for a while, then reentered the work force as a part-time auto parts delivery driver for many of the Auburn auto parts stores; Until he finally retired at the age of 87 years old.

John enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.  He also enjoyed bird watching, NASCAR racing, which he and his family attended many races in New Hampshire,  and watching football.  He enjoyed hot air balloons and he never forgot his ride in one.  He enjoyed taking and sharing pictures, going to the Brunswick air show, where he made some wonderful friends.  He also enjoyed listening to his favorite jazz street band Tuba Skinny.  He also enjoyed chatting on facebook, talking about his time spent in the Air Force, and the planes he flew on.  He also enjoyed going to the local airports in Auburn and Turner, ME.; where he made many friends and got to go for a plane ride a time or two.  He loved his air time.

John was predeceased by his foster parents Philip and Mildred Gordon, and his wife Connie of 45 years.

John leaves behind his daughter Terri-Ann Martin of Auburn, his granddaughters Mindy Greenwood and her husband Nathaniel of Auburn, Khristen Greenwood and her husband Matthew of Litchfield, his grandson Randy Parkin and his fiancé Nicole of Bowdoin, eight great grandchildren; Rilley, Braden, Lillyana, Hunter, Hannah, Levi, Masen and Welles.

John’s family would like to thank Androscoggin Home Health and Hospice, the doctors and nurses, and nurses’ aides on C-3 at St. Mary’s in Lewiston for all the care they gave John in his time of need.  Mindy would like to give an extra big thank you to Jackie from Palliative care at St. Mary’s, for all of her support and kind words and for having her back.

There will be a short graveside committal service at the Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery in Section B at 163 Mt. Vernon Road in Augusta, ME  04330, on Friday, December 8th, 2023 at 2 pm, weather permitting or if there is a State of Maine government closing. The committal will be rescheduled for a later date.
