Date of Birth: December 19, 1926

Biography:

Hallowell: Ernestine Palmer Sproul was born on December 19, 1926 in Pittston, ME, the only child of Ernest and Lula Robbins Palmer. She was a 1944 graduate at Bridge Academy in Dresden where at seventeen she volunteered as a WWII anti-aircraft watchman at the lookout tower located behind the school. To further her education, her parents moved to Hallowell so Ernestine could attend Kennebec School of Commerce in Gardiner. After graduation, her first job was working for Central Maine Power in Augusta in accounting.

In 1947 at the Irish Picnic in Whitefield, Ernestine met Arnold W. Sproul of Windsor who was singing with a local band. They were married in 1948 and made their home in Windsor where they raised their four children.

Ernestine worked various jobs including a cook at the Windsor Grade School, and an accountant for Depositor’s Trust and Sheepscot Health Center. She was active within her community as a member of Windsor Grange, Eastern Star, Whitefield Lions Club and Windsor Ladies’ Aide. She also served several years as an EMT for Windsor Ambulance and Rescue.

In 1996 Ernestine inherited her family’s farm which to this day produces blueberries for Wyman’s of Maine.

In 2018 Ernestine moved to Granite Hill Estates in Hallowell where she enjoyed making new friends, playing Bingo, crafting and working in her flower garden.

On January 18, 2024 Ernestine turned in her lucky Bingo cards and ended her 97-year life’s earthly journey. A life well-lived with many friends, good times and wonderful memories.

She is survived by a son, Arnold Keith Sproul (Kathy Ann), and daughters, Kristine Longstaff, and Kathleen Lyons (Randy). Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Arnold Wesley Sproul, Dewey Sproul (Amanda), Andrew Dionne (Mary), Charles J. Longstaff (Angelique), David Longstaff (Lydia), Lucas Turner (Nicole), and Adam Turner. She is predeceased by her husband, and her son, Clyde Sproul, as well as great- granddaughter, Vanessa, and son-in-law’s, Alan Dionne and Charles C. Longstaff.
