Biography:

AUGUSTA: Thomas P. Sparks, 65 of Augusta, Maine passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010 at the Maine Veteran’s Home Augusta following a long bout with cancer.

He was born on March 13, 1944 in Mineola New York, son of Henry and Mary Sparks. He is survived by his brothers Henry Sparks from Norfolk, Virginia and Rick Sparks from Augusta, Maine and sister Ellie Sparks from Augusta, Maine.

Tom graduated from Kents Hill School in 1964. While a student he starred in several theater productions, and always kept a place in his heart for the generations of drama students who followed in his path. In 1965 he joined the Air Force, and assisted on recognizance flights over Vietnam during his course of duty.

Being an avid outdoor enthusiast, he became a Registered Maine Guide in the 1980s and spent many summers working at various youth camps in Central Maine leading wildnerness trips for teens on northern Maine rivers.

In 1992, he returned to his beloved Kents Hill School as Transportation Coordinator, and worked there for over 17 years. He was a friend to many teachers and students at the school, and will be remembered for his persistent generosity, his “grouchy” but always good humored conversation, and his years of service to the students in the community. His family as well as students all over the world will miss him and remember him fondly.

A burial ceremony will take place at the Maine Veteran’s Cemetery in Augusta on Tuesday, Feb. 2nd at 12 noon. A memorial service will take place at the Performing Arts Center in Newton Hall at Kents Hill School, Kents Hill, Maine on Thursday, Feb. 4^th at 1PM.
