Biography:

Eloise Katharine Skau Smith, beloved mom, grandmother, great grandmother and dear friend, passed surrounded by her loving family on August 21, 2018. Born on September 7th, 1933 in Hartford, CT, she was the only child of Evald and Charlotte (Brucker) Skau. Eloise was also fortunate to have her nana, Ellen Olsen, and aunts Alice, Dorothy and Edith Brucker in her life. She graduated from Bulkeley High School in Hartford, CT in 1951. She married Dennis Smith in 1954 and together they had four children: David, Charles, Ellen and Dennis Jr.Eloise was a loyal friend and dedicated community member. Her high school yearbook described her as "quiet, calm, cool and collected... smooth on a dance floor and slippery on skis". She earned the Girl Scouts' highest award, the Curved Bar (precursor to today's Gold Award). As her children grew, she continued in Scouting as a Cub Scout Den mother and Brownie leader. Church community was important to Eloise, as evidenced by her involvement in youth group, choirs, treasury, newsletters, and knitting and lunch groups. She was a member of Broadmoore Congregational in Hartford, CT, Whitefield Baptist Church in Whitefield, NH and First Parish Congregational in Yarmouth, ME. Eloise worked many jobs within her communities, most notably 17 years clerking at Hutchins Pharmacy in Whitefield, NH. In her free time, Eloise enjoyed skiing, canoeing, candlepin bowling, knitting, calling and writing friends, volunteering, reading, jigsaw and wordsearch puzzles, collecting mugs, and canning and freezing vegetables. Her baked beans, potato salad and spaghetti sauce were family favorites. Family and friends could always count on a birthday card from Eloise. Above all, she loved her family.She dearly loved and was proud of her children David Smith (Beth) of Chittenden, VT, Charles Smith (Sue) of Littleton, CO, Ellen Smith-Erb (Steve) of Cumberland, ME, Dennis Smith (Crystal) of Canal Winchester, OH; her grandchildren Rachel Zazzaro (Dom), Grace Callan (Brian), Zachary Smith (Hilary), Cassidy Smith, Kelly McKenney (JJ), Hannah and Matthew Smith-Erb, Jake Smith (Ashley), Nick Smith (Audrey), Elexia, Jared and Savannah Smith, and Becca Breedlove; and her great-grandchildren include David and Daniel Zazzaro, Ivy and Lucas Callan, and Xavier Smith.The family extends their deep appreciation to the staff at Hawthorne House and Freeport Place for their compassionate care of Eloise.In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the First Parish Congregational Church in Yarmouth, ME.Funeral/Service to be held at First Parish Congregational Church in Yarmouth, ME Friday August 31, 2018 @ 11am.
