Biography:
Allen S. Sloan, recent resident of Clover Health Care, died February 7, 2014. at the age of 84. He was born on June 9, 1929 in Limestone, the son of Hilkiah and Emma (Thompson) Sloan.
Allen was a graduate of Limestone High School and went on after graduation to marry his beloved wife of 54 years, Inez Gamblin, September 29, 1947 and take over his father's potato farm in Limestone, where he worked until his retirement in 1994. He was active in his community, serving on the town Board of Selectmen as well as the Limestone School Board, the Limestone Jaycees and Maine Potato Growers Association. His early retirement was spent keeping busy with volunteer work, managing his farm, and taking care of his beloved wife Inez during her illness until her death in 2001. He sold the farmhouse upon marrying Joyce Pelkey in 2003, and moved to Winslow, although his heart remained in his Aroostook County roots.
As a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church, he was active on many levels serving on the board of directors and various committees, including fund raising events, going so far as to avail himself as a hot dog vendor during the Phish Concerts.
For many years he was actively involved with the Limestone Masonic Lodge #214, serving as District Deputy Grand Master from 1990-1992. Avid square dancers and members of the Limestone Honev Bears, he and Inez travelled around New England and New Brunswick with their fellow square dancing friends Thelma and Walter Ireland.
Allen believed that it was important to serve his community, and did so by delivering meals to home-bound elderly through Meals on Wheels, and working as a volunteer at Inland Hospital in Waterville.
Allen is predeceased by his wife, Inez, oldest son Dan, twin brother Albert Sloan, sisters Pat Boltseridge, Geneva (Sally) Mead, and Beverly Bryant.
He is survived by his daughter, Deborah Sloan of North Monmouth, son, David Sloan and wife Marcia of Mapleton, one brother Phillip Sloan and his wife, Janet of Andover, MA; sisters Mae Daniels of Portland, ME and Pauline Spivey and her husband, Troy of Wichita Falls, TX; Grandchildren Angela Sloan Ebersole, Jason Sloan, Terri Goehring, Jennifer Sloan and Kristy Nichols; 5 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Also surviving is ex-wife, Joyce Pelkey of Kennebunk, Maine.
A memorial service is scheduled at the Limestone Methodist Church, February 22, 1 PM, in Limestone, ME to celebrate Allen's life. Refreshments to follow service.
In lieu of flowers, donations can he made to the United Methodist Church Memorial Fund. Interment of ashes will be later in the spring at a private ceremony at Webster Cemetery on Ward Road.
