Biography:
Esther Beane Santos, 94, born in Caratunk, and later of Waterville, died on August 23, 2013 at the Knox Living Center in Rockland having had a long battle with dementia.
Esther was born on March 12, 1919, the 6th of 7 children, to Perley and Helen (Baker) Beane.
She enjoyed being with her family, especially her grandchildren, word games and crossword puzzles, watching her “stories” (the soaps), trips to the coast, travelling, and animals; especially dogs.
Esther was certified nurses’ aide, working both in Cheyenne, Wy. And seventeen years at Maine General Medical Center in Waterville.
Esther was predeceased in 2001 by her husband Raul F. Santos, to whom she was married 57 years, and with whom she travelled 48 of 50 U.S. states, Guam, Mexico, Canada, & Japan. She was also predeceased by her parents, her six siblings; Lerva Beane, William Beane, Vesta (Betty) Beane, Ethel (Beane) Simpson and her husband Donald Simpson, George Beane and his wife Eddie Beane, Owen Beane and her nephew James A. Simpson.
She is survived by her daughter Sandra S. Knights, grandson Daniel S. Knights and his wife Jessica, grandson Alexander Santos, granddaughter Kerilee M. Knights great grandchildren Akasha Rose Dixon and Orestes Christopher Dixon, son-in-law Leland L. Knights, four nephews; Perley G. Beane, John Beane, Donald R. Simpson, and Robert M. Simpson (with their spouses and children),and close second cousin Eldon Spaulding.
Mama was a strong, loving, Christian lady. She was very loyal, gentle and honest to her family and friends. Even at the end she knew her Lord and Savior. Thank you to all at the Knox Center, who took such good care of her. She loved singing to them. In her early years, she played the piano by ear, always loved music, she was a very special lady; Tough when she had to be, but always with a loving heart. There will be a graveside service at Maine Veterans’ Cemetery, Augusta Rd., Augusta, at 12pm on Thursday, Sept 5th, 2013.
