Biography:

Jewel D. Rider Jr., 80, of Brunswick, Maine passed peacefully away in early morning hours of Friday, January 3rd, 2025 at MidCoast Hospital in Brunswick, Maine, following a lengthy battle with heart disease.

Jewel was born in Crosby, Minnesota on January 11, 1944 to Jewel D. Rider and Marji Reneker.  During his childhood, he lived in California and Washington before settling in Durham, Maine in the 1950’s.  Jewel attended Durham Elementary School through the eighth grade and later built a career as a skilled carpenter and plumber in the Durham and Lisbon Falls area.  Known for his resourcefulness and craftsmanship, Jewel could fix just about anything with his hands.

In April 1977, Jewel Married Brenda G. (Austin) and together they shared nearly 48 years of marriage. They lived in Lisbon Falls and Lakeland, Florida, before returning to Maine several years ago. Jewel had a deep love for the outdoors and found great joy in camping, hunting, and fishing. His appreciation for nature was a defining part of his life. He was also an avid race fan who enjoyed racing stock cars at Oxford Plains Speedway in his younger years. More recently, he and Brenda spent many weekends at Wiscasset Speedway. Jewel and Brenda were devoted members of St. Matthews Church in Lisbon Falls, where the couple were married.

Jewel is survived by his loving wife, Brenda Rider of Brunswick; his brother Gene; his sister Nancy; five children: Guy Rider, David Rider, Darren Rider, Christopher Austin, and Tammie (Rider) Horn; as well as several grandchildren and great-grandchildren who were all dear to his heart. Jewel was predeceased by his parents and one son, Dean Rider. 

A Celebration of Jewel’s life will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2025. At 11:00 AM at St. Matthew’s Church in Lisbon Falls. A reception will follow immediately after the service. Jewel will be remembered for his love of family, the outdoors, and his beloved dog Bear. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
