Biography:

Portland- Laura L. Phelps, 78, of Cumberland, ME. died Friday, November 2, 2012 at The Cedars in Portland, ME.

 

Laura was born May 17, 1934 in Cooperstown, N.Y., the daughter of Lloyd and Helen C. (Snyder) Lawyer. She was a graduate of W.H. Lynch High School in Amsterdam, N.Y. and Wheelock College in Boston, MA. She taught school, substituted and was a special education tutor at different school systems in New England. As a member of the Congregational Church in Cumberland, she served on various committees and as treasurer. She also volunteered at organizations in the communities in which she resided. She was a member of the Portland Wheelock College Club and a former member of the Portland Women's Literary Union. Laura had many interests and enjoyed gardening, playing bridge and attending her knitting group.

 

Laura was predeceased by her brother, Lloyd D. Lawyer.

 

She is survived by two sons, Gregory L. Phelps of Portland, ME. and Jeffrey L. Phelps and his wife Linda of Manhasset, N.Y., and two grandsons, Bradford D. and Michael P. Phelps, also of Manhasset, N.Y. She also leaves her sister-in-law, Bernadine Lawyer of Windsor, CT. and six nieces and two nephews.

 

A memorial service will be held at the Congregational Church in Cumberland, 282 Main St., Cumberland, ME. on November 10, 2012 at 1 p.m. Burial will be at a later date in Cobleskill, N.Y.
