John C. Perry

Date of Death: October 9, 2016

Date of Birth: February 2, 1929

Biography:

HARPSWELL - John Clark Perry - teacher, explorer, craftsman, leader, sailor, and engineer - died peacefully at his home in Harpswell, Maine on Sunday, October 9th, 2016 with his loving family at his side. He was the son of F. Gardiner Perry and Helen Whitehead Perry, born February 2, 1929 in Newton, Massachusetts and grew up in the Wellesley area.

John studied Mechanical Engineering at Northeastern University in Boston. In 1953 he entered the US Army in the quartermaster division and was sent to Germany after a stint in Fort Lewis, Washington. Following his army duty he developed field and hospital kitchens for the US Army Natick. Sailing, mountaineering and photography were among John's many passions. One of his family's most memorable adventures was a boat trip through the Great Lakes canal system from Lake Michigan to the east coast. His love for nature and eye for detail were apparent in the many photographs he took of wildflowers and rhododendrons. He was an avid rock climber as well as a dedicated mountaineering leader and his years of involvement with the Appalachian Mountain Club included a term as its president.

John's fondness for rock climbing led him to his first meeting with Anne Brooks and they were married in 1954. They took up residence in Sherborn, Massachusetts where they brought up their three daughters. In 1985 they moved to Maine, where John volunteered for the Town of Harpswell on the Budget Advisory Committee and later served on the Board of Appeals. John picked up his interest in financial planning as treasurer of the General Convention of the New Jerusalem.

John is survived by his wife, Anne, his three daughters, Lauren, Gail, and Carla, his son-in-law Chandler Pyle and his granddaughter Acacia, as well as many nephews and nieces including Richard Nichols, Auralie LaChance, Helen Remien, Ernest Haskell III, Sheldon Perry, Gardiner Perry, Steven Perry, Alison Brooks, Camilla Brooks, Catherine Hansen, Einar Hansen, Douglas Brooks, Marion Moore, and the next generation of grandnieces and grandnephews.

A memorial service will be held in spring 2017. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Appalachian Mountain Club, 5 Joy Street, Boston Massachusetts (www.outdoors.org) or to the Swedenborg Foundation, 320 N Church St, West Chester, PA 19330 (www.swedenborg.com).
