Biography:
Augusta- John Michael McGrail, 64, of Augusta passed away unexpectedly on September 19, 2024 following a series of health issues.
Michael was born on April 21, 1960, in Augusta to Judith M. McGrail and John F. McGrail. He graduated from Cony High School in 1979 and then enlisted in the US Army. He worked as the manager of Friendly’s restaurant for more than 20 years. He was most recently employed as a salesman at Charlie’s Honda.
Michael was an avid sports enthusiast following many teams both local and professional. He enjoyed running and competed in numerous road races and marathons. He was fond of traveling with his family which included multiple cruises, a trip to Hawaii and various national parks. He was fortunate to have recently enjoyed a family vacation with his daughters and ex-wife in March 2024. Michael often reminisced about his trip to Ireland and was proud of his Irish heritage. In his later years, he enjoyed playing golf with friends and family. He was a keen news enthusiast and took great pride in staying up-to-date on current events. He is remembered as a loving father, dedicated brother, and jolly uncle and will be warmly remembered for his early, swift Irish exits.
He is survived by his daughters Katelyn McGrail and boyfriend Esa Maki of South Berwick and Molly McGrail of Readfield, and his dear friend, ex-wife Bethany McGrail, his siblings Susan Berube (and husband Paul) of Augusta, Betsy McGrail of Manchester, Norman McGrail (and wife Kellie) of Pittsfield, as well as many nieces, nephews, and adoring great nieces and nephews. Michael was preceded in death by his parents John and Judith McGrail, brother Charlie McGrail, and sister Margaret McGrail.
We warmly invite you to a casual gathering in celebration of Michael’s life which will be held on Sunday, Sept. 29, 2024, at John Sullivan’s Pub in Augusta from 1 pm – 4 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the ‘Charles A. McGrail Scholarship Fund’ at Cony High School or the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in memory of his late siblings.
