Nelson G. Maxim

Date of Death: October 23, 2011

Date of Birth: May 4, 1948

Biography:

Nelson G. Maxim passed away October 23, 2011 at Glenridge Nursing Home where he had been a resident for over four years. Born on May 4, 1948, son of John N. and Millicent (Kendall) Maxim, Nelson graduated as Class Salutatorian in 1966 from Governor Baxter School for the Deaf, Mackworth Island, and from the American School for the Deaf in West Hartford CT in 1968.

Although he lost his hearing to a childhood illness before the age of 2, Nelson had a lifelong love and appreciation of country music. Meeting and talking with Merle Haggard was a high point of his life.

Nelson's happy personality earned him his nickname of Sonny, which he was called by most of his life. He spent many childhood summers with his beloved Grammie and Grandpa Maxim at their camp on Androscoggin Lake in Wayne.  Nelson loved Maine, especially camping out at Moosehead Lake with his family, which he did annually for 30 years. An avid photographer, he won a national award for his photo of  a sunset at the Portland Head Light. He had a great love of cats and always had his small family of kitties around him.

Nelson trained as an apprentice electrician, earning journeyman status. He worked for many years at the Lewiston/Auburn Children's Home as a maintenance person, where a generation of children enjoyed his antics and playful personality.

Nelson met his soulmate, Heather, later in life, and they were wed August 5, 1989. They had a very close, loving relationship.

Nelson leaves behind his beloved wife of 22 years, Heather (Tower) Maxim of Augusta; his four sisters, Barbara Sansbury and Jim Alexopolous of Augusta; Sally Carey  and husband Frank of Palm Bay Florida; Edith Maxim of Winthrop; and Rosemary Maxim of Winthrop; his sister-in-law Cheryl Murdock and husband Charles of Dunnellon FL. He also leaves behind nieces and nephews whom he loved as his own children; Johnny Maxim, Gardiner; Dawn (Carey) Clough and Rick, Indianola FL; Randy Maxim, Augusta; Tania (Carey) Smith & Scott, Tipp City, OH; Sharon Sawyer, Augusta; Gregory Maxim & Tracy Jackson, Augusta; Tina (Sansbury) Griggs, Beaufort SC;  Vern Sansbury, Augusta; and Christopher Maxim Spiller, FL, as well as many grandnieces and grandnephews and several aunts, uncles and cousins, all of whom he loved dearly.

Nelson also leaves behind many close friends including Tobey Bourisk and wife Vickie; Calvin Woodcock and wife Robin, & Lenny Grant.

Nelson was a kind, loving, gentle husband, son, grandson, brother, uncle and nephew who knew the value of family. His sense of humor and unconditional love will be greatly missed.

A special thanks goes to the wonderful staff of Glenridge Nursing Home of Augusta who took such good loving care of Nelson during his stay there. His family  greatly appreciates how much they did for him every day, always treating him with love and dignity. God Bless you, you are indeed earthbound angels.

Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service to be held at RiverRock Christian Fellowship church 65 River Road, Route 9, Chelsea Maine on October 26, 2011 at 6:00pm.  Coffee will be served afterward in the fellowship hall.
