Date of Death: March 30, 2011

Date of Birth: May 30, 1940

Biography:

BRIDGTON — Barbara Anne MacFarland, 70, died March 30th at her home surrounded by her loving family following a long courageous struggle with cancer.

She was born in Portsmouth, N.H., May 30, 1940, the daughter of Arthur and Doris Walker Gorman.  Barbara graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1958 and from Fisher College. She married David MacFarland on Sept. 24, 1960.  They enjoyed 50 beautiful years together. The couple renewed their vows on their 50th anniversary in 2010 in the presence of their family and her maid of honor and long time friend, at one of their favorite places, the beach.

During Dave’s career in the Coast Guard, the couple lived in Dorchester, Mass., Honolulu, Hawaii, Georgetown, Mass., Kittery, Me., and Cape Cod, Mass., finally settling on Moose Pond in Bridgton in 1977. Barbara had been employed as a secretary for Houghton-Mifflin Publishing Co. in Boston, Levinson & Cobb law firm in Hawaii, and had worked for over 30 years for The Bridgton News before retiring due to her illness in 2007.

While her children were growing up, Barbara served as a Girl Scout leader, PTA member, helped with school activities, and was a Sunday School teacher. She was a lifetime member of Beta Sigma Phi International, serving in many offices.  She served on the Board of Directors for Landmark Human Resources, Inc., for over 18 years, and was active in the First Congregational Church. Besides being together with her family, she enjoyed reading, needlework, sewing, walking, the beach, camping at Popham’s Beach, and her Moose Pond loons.

She is survived by her husband, David MacFarland of Bridgton; two daughters, Robin (David) Carlow of Simpsonville, S.C., and Dawn (Jim Kavanagh) MacFarland of South Portland; a son, Stephen MacFarland of Davies, Fla., and three grandsons, Paul, Scott, and Logan.

The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to all her wonderful friends and the staff at Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice, Dr. Dugan and the Oncology staff at Memorial Hospital for the excellent care they provided to Barbara.

A celebration of life will be held on April 9th, at 11a.m. at the First Congregational Church United Church of Christ in Bridgton.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Barbara’s name can be made to:
