Laveta C. Ligameri
Date of Death: January 9, 2019
Date of Birth: November 16, 1916
Biography:
BRUNSWICK - On January 8, 2019, Laveta passed from this life on earth to be with her Heavenly Father. Laveta Christine Smith was born on November 16, 1916, to Ernest Patrick Smith and Lavina Elizabeth Hobson Smith in an area known as Christopher, outside of Neosho, Missouri. Laveta was predeceased by her parents, her sisters, Irene and Velma, her brothers, Bythol (Bike) and Doyle, her husbands, Maurice A. Meredith and Albert Ligameri and two of her children, Maurice A. Meredith, Jr. and Theda Renee Meredith Ramsey Shapiro.
Laveta grew up on a farm with no indoor plumbing and no electricity. Once a year she got a new pair of shoes and they had to last a year so much of her time was spent barefoot. Growing up poor taught Laveta how to be frugal but she never hesitated to share whatever she had with someone less fortunate.
On June 13, 1938, Laveta married Maurice Alfred Meredith in Neosho. Maurice was a minister for the Church of Christ and as such the family moved frequently living in Florida, Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Washington, several areas of Southern California and Arizona. Laveta was a strong Christian woman who knew her Bible and quoted it frequently. She was always ready to set an extra place at the dinner table or make room for someone to stay overnight if there was a need. She ministered alongside her husband by caring for others and sharing her beliefs when there was an opportunity.
Surviving Laveta are: her daughter Betsy Meredith of Maine and her son Malcolm Meredith (Katy) of Oregon, a daughter-in-law, Sandra Meredith of Nevada and a son-in-law, Lee Shapiro of Washington. Also, her grandchildren: Mia Meredith Sanders (Brian) and Jeffrey Meredith of California; Michael Meredith of Nevada; Kathryn Dudley, Janel Dudley Goodman (Jonathan) and Paul Dudley (Tiffany) of Maine; Derek Meredith and Graeme Meredith of Washington; Tia Powell (Jon), Paige Glass (Jeff) of Oregon; Alex Ramsey (Maria), Christine Ramsey and Ian Shapiro all of Washington together with seventeen great-grandchildren.
Laveta’s remains will be interred next to her husband of sixty-one years in Coolidge, Arizona at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Churches of Christ Disaster Relief Effort, Inc., P.O. Box 111180, Nashville, TN 37222-1180.
A funeral/memorial service will be held on February 2, 2019, at 2:00 pm at the Brunswick Church of Christ, 1 Jordan Avenue, Brunswick, Maine.
Laveta’s family would like to thank Funeral Alternatives for their help and kindness during this difficult time.
