Biography:
Winona L. Jones, 90, of Augusta, passed away peacefully Oct. 31, 2013, at Maine General Medical Rehabilitation and Nursing Care. She was born in Jefferson, Maine on August 23, 1923, the daughter of Harold Dow and Bernice (Cunningham) Dow. She attended school in Jefferson, graduated from Cony High School in 1941 and attended Gates Business School in Augusta, ME.
She enjoyed reading, cooking, sewing, crafts, going to the ocean, traveling, playing bridge, sitting in the sun. She faithfully cared for family using her creative skills through cooking/baking, sewing and crafting. She loved her home on Purinton Avenue and family gatherings filled her with joy and happiness.
She was employed by the State of Maine Bureau of Alcoholic Beverages for 10 years and then worked at her husband's accounting practice for several more years until her decision to stay home and raise her family.
Winona was predeceased by her parents; her husband Harold L. Jones of Augusta; her sister Edwina Gray of Maryland.
She is survived by her daughter Karen Jones of Brunswick; Alan Jones and his wife Dawn King-Jones of Sidney. Her grandchildren include Steven Jones and his partner Sue of Portland; Kevin Jones and his wife Katie of Portland; Elizabeth Jones of Busan, So. Korea. Step Grandchildren include Jennifer Browne of Augusta; Bethany Browne of Bath; Stephen Browne of Winterport. A niece Sandy Raines and her husband Tom and their son Thomas of Maryland. She is also survived by four great grandchildren, Ryan, Kolby, Alana and Atreyu.
A funeral reception will be held for family and friends of Winona at The Governor Hill Mansion (Columbus Hall), Saturday, November 9th, at 11:30 am. following a brief family interment service at Fairview Cemetery in Jefferson.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at Renaissance Home Care, Martha Ballard Unit at Granite Hill Estates, Maine General Medical Rehabilitation and Nursing Care at Glenridge and Maine General Hospice for their kindness, compassion and genuine caring during the last years of her life. She always felt their warmness and comfort.
