Jimmie L. Harper

Date of Death: March 23, 2019

Date of Birth: April 12, 1939

Biography:

Bath - Jimmie Loyd Harper passed away peacefully, after a long illness, on March 23, 2019 in his home with his loving wife, Phyllis,  at his side.

Jimmie was born April 12, 1939 in So. Carrollton, KY to Walter Thurman Harper and Lillian Ruby (Nalley) Harper.

Jimmie joined the Navy at age 17 and was transferred to Brunswick, ME.  While stationed in Brunswick he met his beautiful wife of  60 years, Phyllis A, White whom he married on March 28, 1959.  Jimmie was very proud of the four boys he and Phyllis raised,  Steven, Joseph (Joe), Mark, and James.  Jimmie was like a Father to his son's partner, Michelle, and his daughter-in-laws, Kay,  Debbie, and Lori.  He cherished his 9 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren, often attending sporting events when he could.

Jimmie held a 35 year career with Bath Iron Works in Structural Engineering and was a volunteer Little League coach and umpire.  He was a swim instructor and a Popham Beach lifeguard where he once rescued people off the famous sandbar.  He possessed many incredible talents such as woodworking, specializing in folk art and almost every family member or friend owns a piece of his work.  He carved figures, big and small, simple to elaborate, porch art, and intricate boxes and furniture.  He enjoyed painting scenes and drawing foldk art cartoons and was known for frequently sending his lontime, best friend, Ron Eby, many greeting cards depicting their adventures together over the years.  Jimmie enjoyed attending car shows, riding his Gold Wing motorcycle, and the many road trips he took with Phyllis.  Rather persnickety at times, that is what made Jimmie the endearing character who will be sorely missed by his family and friends.

Jimmie was predeceased by his parents, his loving Brother, Lilburn, his sister, Linda, and his first dog companion, Katie.   Jimmie remained close to his sister-in-law, Kathryn Harper, and followed his nephew, Ray Harper's, basketball coaching career  religiously.

Jimmie is survived by his wife, Phyllis, his four sons, and their families.  The family would like to extend a thank you to CHANS and  Jimmie's sister-in-law, Susan Castor, who helped tremendously.  A final special mention to Gracie, Jimmie's dog companion who  loved him unconditionally.

A memorial service to celebrate Jimmie's life will be announced at a later date.
