Marsha 'Mick' McGeorge Hardy

Date of Death: November 18, 2013

Date of Birth: October 9, 1941

Biography:

Marsha (“Mick”) McGeorge Hardy of Gorham Maine died peacefully in her home due to complications from ALS on November 18, 2013.  Her family and partner were by her side.  She was born to the late Donald and Mary McGeorge  in Batavia, NY on October 9th, 1941.  Marsha graduated from Salem High School in Salem Oregon in 1959 and went on the graduate with a BA from Skidmore College in 1963.  She married Edmund Hardy in 1964 and raised three sons with him before divorcing in 1987.  Though a teacher when she got married, Marsha soon stopped working in order to focus on raising her boys.  She instilled a tremendous sense of adventure in her three sons, passing on a lasting zeal for the wonders of nature and the world around them.  She'd often pack the gang and whisk them off for a weekend of camping and sightseeing.  In the late 80’s, she entered the work force and developed a successful career in the insurance industry where she earned her CPCU in 1991, a prestigious industry certification.  In 1999, she retired from work and moved to Maine.  One of the things Marsha loved to do is give, and make other people happy.  As a retiree, she found a way to give in her community by volunteering for several non profits.  At one of these non profits, she met another volunteer – Doug Johnson, who became her partner and the love of her life.  Doug and Marsha enjoyed traveling around the world, biking, walking, and spending lots of time with friends and family.

Marsha is survived by her partner Doug, her three children Scott Hardy of Portland ME, Gregg Hardy of Portland OR, Brent Hardy of Morristown NJ, and her seven grandchildren Ben, Brielle, Grace, Amelia, Owen, Claire, Ella.  She also has two brothers (Doug and Stu) and one sister (Sally) who survive her.

Marsha had requested that there be no service upon her death, and instead requested that her ashes be spread at the next family reunion.  In lieu of sending flowers, Marsha also requested that all donations be made to Mercy Corps: Mercy Corps exists to alleviate suffering, poverty and oppression by helping people build secure, productive and just communities.
