Kathryn E. Hadden

Date of Death: August 24, 2018

Date of Birth: February 12, 1921

Biography:

GEORGETOWN - Kathryn Elizabeth Falck Hadden, born in Cheyenne Wyoming Feb 12, 1921, died peacefully at her beloved residence at the Vicarage-by-the-Sea in Harpswell, Maine, on Friday, August 24, 2018.

Betty, as she was known all her life, was an athlete, Red Cross worker, wife, mother, grandparent, great-grandparent, friend of many, and administrator in various capacities ranging from the first CIA office in Berlin to a long and formative stint at the Apprenticeshop in Bath, and later, Rockport.

Her father, the last mounted Army colonel, with the 10th Cavalry, took his family to a number of posts all over the western US, with a home base in coastal California. In Berlin she married John Hadden, a former West Point engineer who joined the Berlin office in 1949. They had four children and lived in Berlin, Hamburg, Salzburg, Tel Aviv and Washington DC, before John retired in 1973.

Her children are all artists––John (theater), Barbara (painting and photography), Alex (a boat-builder who lives in Georgetown with his wife Julie), and Jamie (painting and bronze sculpture, married to Marcella). Her lifelong passions included jumping horses (she was internationally ranked), competitive tennis and swimming, her sister Barbara, and her grandchildren Will and Reilly.

They retired to Brunswick Maine, where they led an active life, especially in the boat-building community, and on Cliff Island, where she had bought a small house 50 years ago. John died at home in 2013 and Betty finally moved to Harpswell, where she lived gracefully until the end of her life.
