Georgie Wilma Gurney
Date of Death: November 2, 2024
Date of Birth: August 2, 1936
Biography:
Augusta- Georgie Wilma Gurney passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 2, 2024, at the age of 88 at Schooner Estates in Auburn. She was born and raised in Augusta and was a graduate of Cony High School, Class of 1955. She was married for 57 years to her high school sweetheart the late Alpha Charles Gurney. She was the daughter of the late Wilma and Roe Palmer of West River Road in Augusta.
Georgie was a full-time homemaker for many years while her children were young. She then worked for several years in the cafeteria at Cony High School. In addition, she provided in-home daycare for many children over the years. She was well-loved by the children in her care and found a special place in everyone’s heart. Her smile could light up a room and her baked treats melted in your mouth—especially her famous apple danish, brownies, and whoopie pies—which were staples at school bake sales and family holidays.
Georgie was a long-time member and active participant at Penney Memorial United Baptist Church in Augusta where she served in childcare and education.
She had a true love of nature and spent much of her free time in her organic garden or walking in her fields often accompanied by her trusted dog. She enjoyed feeding the birds on her property and would brave the weather in the middle of many a snowstorm to make sure they were well-fed. In her later years, bird-watching became a favorite activity.
Georgie is survived by her daughter Holly Gurney of Lewiston and daughter Valerie Gurney and husband Matthew Daniel of Bedford, Massachusetts. She had three beloved grandchildren Riley Daniel, Elizabeth Gurney, and Parker Daniel. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law Bonnie Gurney of Manchester and Pam Palmer of Augusta as well as many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her four siblings: Maryanna Nelson, Lilian Grenier, Una Tracy, and her twin brother George Palmer, all of Augusta.
