Richard Loring Green

Date of Death: December 13, 2023

Date of Birth: August 28, 1938

Biography:

Richard Loring Green, 85, passed away peacefully Wednesday, December 13, 2023, at the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta.

He was born on August 28, 1938 to the late Garnett and Marguerite “Peggy” (O’Hara) Green of Lubec, Maine. Richard graduated Lubec High School in 1956. On August 16, 1956, he joined the US Navy and served for three years. He served on the Perch, Capitaine, and Nautilus submarines. Richard married Linda May (Dyke) Green on September 4, 1964, after meeting on a blind date. They were married for 56 years before her passing in 2020. They raised their three children in Harrison and moved to Hartford in their later years to be near his aging in-laws.

After leaving the service, Richard worked on radio towers in Cutler as a civilian employee of the Navy for three years. During that time, he also worked as a professional scuba diver. He then spent a long career in construction and short and long-haul truck driving. In his spare time, Richard enjoyed tinkering on his trucks and other machinery, watching football and featherweight boxing; canoeing and kayaking; taking day trips to sightsee and enjoy Maine; and eating ice cream with his wife. He loved dogs, and if you saw him around town, you would have seen a very well-behaved dog in his passenger seat. He didn’t like music with vocals, preferring instrumental music, though Johnny Cash was the exception. In his words, Johnny Cash was the only singer he could sing along with.

Richard was a devoted father and grandfather and would do anything he could for the people he loved. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Jan Green; his brother and sister-in-law Leith and Rose Dyke; his children, Melissa Curit, Aaron Green, and Valorie Wimmer and her husband Steve; his grandchildren Rachel Curit and her husband Benjamin Reis, Mariel Curit, Abigail Johnson and her husband Benjamin, and Audrey Wimmer; his great-grandson, Finnegan Curit Reis, as well as nieces and nephews, extended family, and friends who loved him dearly.

Richard is predeceased by his wife Linda Green; his parents, Garnett and Peggy Green; his younger brother Peter Green; and his in-laws, John and Jean Dyke.

The family would like to express immense gratitude to the staff at the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta for the care and comfort they provided Richard in his final year. Also, thank you to Beacon Hospice Care for keeping him comfortable in his final days.

The family is planning a funeral service in the spring.
