William Gifford Sr

Date of Death: May 30, 2024

Date of Birth: December 20, 1932

Biography:

William “Bill” Gifford, 91, of Freeport, Maine died at home surrounded by family on May 30, 2024 after a brief illness.

Bill was born on December 20, 1932, to Clarence and Linda Gifford, in Philadelphia. There, he began his work as an electrician and met his wife of 65 years, Barbara. They were married on September 27, 1958 and had 3 children: Bonnie Hart (George DiRado), William, Jr. (Hilda-May), and Betsy Davis (Roland Davis).

Bill and his family moved to Maine in 1970, where all 5 members pitched in to build their family home. He quickly became a pillar of the Freeport community, serving as Freeport policeman and later as a member of the Fire Police. As a longstanding member of St. Jude’s church, Bill served as Eucharistic minister, usher, and handyman. He was a Mason and an Elk.

A master electrician with the IBEW for 65 years, Bill also dabbled in electronics, appliance sales, and landscaping. He loved his construction “toys” and was always found working outside on his property. He was instrumental in getting the bus for the Freeport Elders, and driving them on field trips throughout Maine and New Hampshire. After several years in retirement, Bill worked at both L.L. Beans and Shaw’s.

He instilled his love of ice cream, mischief, and animals in his 6 grandchildren: Katie Hart (Henry Dorger), Patrick Hart (Malerie Suess), Megan Hunt, Levi Curtis (Krystal), Arthur Gifford, and Sam Curtis (Randi).

Bill is survived by his loving wife, Barbara; siblings Frank, Tom, Linda, and Edward; many nieces and nephews; children; grandchildren; step-grandchildren Paul DiRado (Kristy), Ryan Davis (Teresa Haycock), Gina DiRado (Ali Goheer), Dana (Mike Nicholson), Josh Davis (Trena Scott); and great grandchildren Tianna, Ryan, Louis, Dean, Oscar, Apollo, and Riley.

A Celebration Of Life ceremony will be held in the fall. In lieu of flowers, you may donate to Hospice of Southern Maine, 390 UA Route One, Scarborough, ME 04074
