Biography:
Eugene P. Elcik, 91, of Lisbon Falls, ME, died on September 16, 2024 at Lewiston, ME with his wife of 67 years, Lorraine, by his side. Gene was born on March 26, 1933 in Durham, ME to Andrew and Eugenie Elcik.
Gene was an Air Force veteran. When he left the Air Force, he worked at the Worumba Mill in Lisbon Falls before continuing his education. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Southern Maine. Gene worked at the Brunswick Naval Air Station as a Civilian Special Services Officer. He was responsible for the golf course, producing and managing entertainment productions and sports programs, including the first Naval District ski competitions. Gene obtained his real estate appraisal license and he owned and operated a real estate appraisal firm.
Gene loved animals and was the President of the Brunswick Area Humane Society for several years. He worked tirelessly for animal welfare and helped develop the Department of Animal Welfare within the Maine Department of Agriculture.
He held memberships and certifications with the Golf Course Superintendents Association and the Amateur Athletic Union, which qualified him as a manager for various amateur sports.
Gene enjoyed down hill skiing, was a ski instructor, and organized ski programs for the Brunswick Naval Air Station, teaching the participants how to ski. Later in life, he got joy out of painting beautiful oil paintings. The accomplishment that he was most proud of was becoming a published author late in life. He wrote and had published ten fiction novels with a Maine flavor including adventure, romance, crime, and drama.
He was predeceased by his parents; his brother and sister-in-law, Andrew and Barbara Elcik; and his nephew, Andrew Elcik, Jr.
Gene is survived by his loving wife, Lorraine, his niece Sue Elcik and her wife, Lorrie Mitchell, his great-niece Meagan Desjardins, her husband Ralph, and their children.
There will be no calling hours at Gene’s request. A private graveside service will be held for family. Any donations in his memory can be made to the Brunswick Humane Society or a Humane Society of your choice.
