John James Cooper

Date of Death: September 27, 2024
Date of Birth: December 22, 1945
Biography:
John J. Cooper, age 78, of Arrowsic, ME, was a man whose heart was as expansive as the horizon he loved to sail toward. Born on December 22, 1945, in the Bronx, NY, to Thomas and Genevieve Cooper, John grew up with his brothers Thomas and Donald, embracing a strong work ethic and a deep love for family. He was a devoted husband to Arlene for 56 wonderful years and a loving father to Jennifer, Timothy, and Daniel, and bonus child Regina. As a grandfather to Lukas, Priya, Arjun, Ui, Lakshmi, John, Sam, Jack, and Sadie, his greatest joy came from spending time with his grandchildren, teaching them, laughing with them, and watching them grow.
After serving three years in the Navy during the Vietnam era, John developed a lifelong love for the water. Whether it was fishing, boating, or sailing, being near the ocean or on the water brought him peace. He had an adventurous spirit, always ready to set sail or cast a line, but it was never just about the activity—it was about sharing these moments with his loved ones.
John worked hard throughout his life, first as a construction worker in New York City and Morris, NY, and later as a project manager for Jones Lang LaSalle in New York. He took pride in his work, knowing that every project was a reflection of his dedication and care. He was also a proud member of the Mason Tenders Union and an active board member of the Corrotoman By the Bay homeowners association in Lancaster, VA, where he enjoyed taking care of the community pool.
Beyond his professional achievements, John was a man of many hobbies. He loved fishing, golfing, gardening, birdwatching, and of course, cheering for his favorite sports teams. His home was always filled with life—whether it was through his constant home improvement projects, his love for tending the garden, or the joy he found in spending time with his grandchildren.
He wasn't just a man of hard work; he knew how to blend productivity with fun. Many afternoons were spent boating, golfing, or working on family projects, always with a smile and a good-natured laugh. He passed on his love for building and creating to his children and grandchildren, teaching them the importance of patience, craftsmanship, and the joy of working with their hands.
John was predeceased by his parents and his brother Thomas. He is survived by his wife, Arlene, his children, Jennifer, Timothy, and Daniel, his brother Donald, and his beloved grandchildren. His legacy is one of love, laughter, and a deep connection to family, community, and the things he valued most.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his memory will live on in the lives of his family, in the many projects he completed with pride, and in the calm waters he loved so much.
A celebration of John's life will be planned next year.
