Biography:

AUGUSTA -- Sylvester E. Cobbs, 83, or "Cobby," as known by all, passed away on June 10, 2013.

He was born in Philadelphia, May 4, 1930, the son of Lloyd and Lottie Cobbs.

He taught photography at the University of Maine and Capital Area Technical Center in Augusta for several years. Cobby will be remembered by all his kids as he was a substitute teacher for many years in the Augusta schools.

Cobby retired from the U.S. Navy in 1968 after serving 21 years, 10 months and 12 days.

He was a life member of the American Legion Post 2, filling several chairs and serving as the post commander for two separate terms. He was a member of the Augusta Eagles Club serving as worthy vice president and past trustee. He was a life-time member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, a member of the Augusta Elks Lodge as a past chaplain and serving on the Investigating Committee for several years. He also is a member of the AMVETS and the 40 & 8's.

Cobby was preceded by his parents; an infant son; granddaughter Tyme Myers; and stepson Leon S. Routh.

Cobby is survived by his wife, Mary, of 27 years; sons Sylvester Cobbs Jr. and Ernesto Cobbs; and daughters Deanna Yagrudez and Belita Velizco; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and his immediate family.

A celebration of life will be from 1 to 4 p.m. June 15 at the American Legion Post 2 on Capital Street.

A military service will be at 9 a.m. June 25 at the Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery on Mount Vernon Road, Augusta.
