Biography:
AUBURN – Aubrey V. Childs, 88, of Sabattus, formerly of Lewiston, went to be with the Lord on September 12th, 2010. He passed away at the Hospice House, surrounded by his loving family, following a long illness.
He was born in Mt. Vernon on March 21st, 1922 the son of Clinton Childs and Lavena (Campbell) Childs.
Aubrey was educated in Lewiston schools. He also served his country proudly in the U.S. Army during World War II in Europe.
He worked for many years as a hand-sewer and then went on to work at Lee Olds Cadillac where he retired from in 1985. He was a member of First Assembly of God church where he served on the board for 9 years. Among his many interests, he especially enjoyed playing horse shoes, going to the beach, family gatherings, and one of his greatest joys was being with his granddaughter.
Aubrey married Irene (Gallant) Childs in 1952 and they were married for 58 years. They had two children.
He is survived by his wife Irene Gallant Childs of Sabattus; son Christopher Aubrey Childs of Sabattus; daughter Amanda Labonte and her husband Michael of Lewiston; grandchildren John Labonte of New Hampshire, Joshua Labonte and his wife Candace of Litchfield, Ashlee Marie Labonte of Lewiston; sister Virginia Laverdiere of Westbrook; sister-in-law Ruth Childs of Auburn; brother-in-law Leo Gallant of Florida; special friends Phil Cantin and Richard Labonte; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; brother Willis Childs; sister Beverly Sands; and brother Kenneth Childs.
The family would like to thank Dr. Jeff Brown, St. Mary’s staff at C-2, Dr. Austin and the staff at the Hospice House for all their wonderful care.
Family and friends are invited to visit on Thursday, September 16th, from 6PM to 7PM at First Assembly of God Church. A funeral service will then follow at 7 PM. Committal services will be held on Friday at Maine Veteran’s Cemetery chapel, Mt. Vernon Road, Augusta, at 10 AM with military honors. The Rev. Donald Cougle will be officiating.
