Jane E. Chapmann
Date of Death: November 15, 2024
Date of Birth: July 11, 1940
Biography:
West Gardiner - Jane Chapman passed away peacefully at home, Friday November 15, 2024.
She was 84. She was raised on the family farm in Norway Maine, and it was there a strong work
ethic was instilled. As a young adult she worked her way through college at a nursing home,
ultimately earning her Masters degree in Education. Most of her teaching career was spent in
MSAD 11, where she helped develop countless students, and earned many lifelong friendships.
After retiring from teaching, she worked several years for area businesses, until finally retiring
completely from the Maine Turnpike Authority. She wasn’t all work and no play. Her biggest
interests aside from family, were sports and music. She had a particular affinity for tennis,
having played it for many years. She enjoyed High School basketball, and attended the
tournaments for many years. She was a Patriots and Red Sox fan, during both their successes
and failures. She appreciated appreciable music of all genres. I have fond memories of family
excursions to bluegrass festivals, with a pinch of camping on the side. She was a woman of
Faith. She sang and was the Pianist for 2 local churches for many years. She was comfortable
with where she was going when her time here was done. As I’m writing this, I recognize the
irony that she won’t be proofreading it for me. I’m sure if there are grammatical errors, there’ll be
some sort of sign.
Jane was predeceased by her husband; Gordon “Sonny” Chapman, her youngest son; Corey
Chapman, and her parents; Sherwood and Elizabeth Knightly.
She is survived by her sons, Jeff Chapman and wife Valerie of West Gardiner, and Chris
Chapman and wife Kathy of Randolph; Her brother Sherman Knightly and wife Mary of North
Amity; Grandchildren Dylan Chapman, Jed Chapman, Jesse Chapman, Sarah Batres, and their
families; an extensive extended family on the Chapman side, as well as many wonderful friends,
Beverly, Andrea, Donna and Ellen to name a few.
From my heart, and on behalf of the family, she will be missed. She was kind, nurturing and
caring, she was humble, she was strong.
Borrowed from a friend: “our most sorrowful goodbyes are someone else’s most joyous
hello’s”. Considering she passed, and was reunited with my Dad and brother on my Dad’s
birthday, that seemed fitting.
At her request there will be no formal service. We will have a gathering tbd in the Spring, for
family and friends. Mom loved her animals. She developed a special bond with our dufus of a
dog “Murphy” over the past year. In lieu of flowers, if you choose, donations can be made to
your preferred animal rescue or shelter.
