It was such a pleasure to work with Dan during the early days of the Balloon Fest. After he had his stroke he would often drop by our house for a chat. He was a wonderful man and I was privileged to know him.

It is with great sadness that I read of our losing a friend and someone who cared about his community. I first met Dan when he came to me with the idea of having a Balloon Festival in Lewiston-Auburn, Maine. His passion in telling me about the possibilities led me to believing in him and start to research and develop a business plan. It wasn't easy as my husband and I travelled and contacted many balloon festivals including the grandaddy of them all-The New Mexico one. We wanted to make sure the monies earned from this would stay in our community to help our nonprofits and Dan agreed. Thus was born the Great Falls Balloon Festival which has done wonders for our area and showed tourism can happen here. The times I visited him or met him in his wheelchair on the streets, I always knew I could count on getting my biggest hug. He had a big heart, loved fun and even in his sickness he continued to think of his friends and community. Hats off to you Dan for loving us and your community. It was far from easy but we continued to believe and we did it - and they said it wouldn't fly here...We flew and high for many years because you didn't give up on your idea. Cofounder of Great Falls Balloon Festival- Rachel - Love and God Bless. I will never forget my initiating ride to ballooning with you.

I knew Danny in high school and we dated for awhile and he was always a gentleman and had a great sense of humor and was just so much fun to be around. You could not resist his smile and good nature. We met up again years later and I lived in the same apartment building as him but didn't know it and I started receiving poems and flowers and cards signed by a secret admirer. It would say" I am closer then you think". Little did I know he was in the apartment on the 1st floor and I was on the 3rd. He finally revealed himself and we continued to be friends for as long as I lived in Maine. He was very proud to be a fireman and always talked about his great family and friends and his dreams. I would see articles about in him in the newspaper about him and his hot air balloons. He was a wonderful man, friend and a patient listener and a good hugger. RIP Danny and I feel honored to have had you past through my life while you were on this earth and to provide me with some great memories.

You are now free of the bonds that changed your life. I will always remember our time at Engine 5. Many memories of those days.
