February 9, 2015 | Amanda Griffin (Tsetsi) - Wayland, MA -- USA

Nancy, Lindsay and Sarah,
I worked at Brunswick HS with Joe for one year. I moved to Brunswick by myself and knew no one. Joe immediately took me under his wing and helped me feel at home. A wonderful counselor, he had a natural way with kids and was a mentor to me professionally. He was also a friend and in a place where I had no connections was always willing to grab a beer and have some laughs. Joe will always hold a special place in my heart.

He was one of a kind and I will remember him always.

Mr. Guest was great. Always had a great attitude. As a Georges Valley HS student '80-'84 I maintain the feeling that he always cared about our development. He was known to stretch the limits when it came to helping us acquire greater exposure that would help in our progress toward being who we could be. To this I can personally attest.
Thanks Joe for the laughs, caring and respect you gave us.

January 27, 2015 | Tahnthawan Coffin - Brunswick, Maine -- USA

I have such fond memories of Mr Guest during my days at BHS. The teenage years could be so full of angst, tears and misunderstandings, and a hug or reassuring chat to Mr Guest was often the much needed salve on a tough day.

I wish I could share my favorite memory of Mr Guest in person, but a written version will have to suffice:
When I was a freshman, swept up in the excitement of sports and the newness of a larger school with fresh faces, I was given a D in my Algebra I class on my first report card. Ashamed, terrified of my parents' response, and convinced I would be a failure in life, I found my way to the guidance counselors' office. Mr Guest, who was not my assigned counselor, saw a tear-streaked face in need of a listening ear and invited me into his office to talk. After hearing my story, he reached slowly into his desk, pulled out an old and folded piece of paper, and asked me to have a look at it. I studied the paper- a report card- full of Ds. He asked me to read the name on the card and as I did, I realized his intentions. "I too, was horrible at math" he said with a knowing smile. "Do you think I'm a failure?"
"Of course not" I replied.
"I think you're going to be ok in this world" he said, eyes sparkling.
Who could argue with a man who kept proof of his journey on a crumpled piece of paper in the back of his desk? Not me.
So many thanks, Mr Guest, for sharing your gift with us all.

Mr Guest

Joe Guest was the most unconditional, kind, and witty individual I have had the privilege of calling friend. He was an intrinsic motivator who knew how to empower individuals to seek out their true potentials and his reward was simply knowing he helped someone. Joe has left a positive impact on so many people. It will be a transition for so many to adjust to life without his kind support, optimistic attitude, and gentle strength.
My thoughts and prayers are with Joe's family and friends and may the multitude of memories be a forever reminder of Joe's spirit. It is only fitting to part with the words so many of us will recall hearing on a daily basis or when we parted from Joe's company…..drive safely and make good choices.
Farewell my friend; I cherish the memories.
WIth love and admiration, Heather

I am so glad I had the opportunity to work with Joe. He was a kind and caring man. I don't think he realized how many lives he inspired and hearts he touched. When he walked in my office he always made me smile. I's sure everyone remembers his warm hugs, wonderful smile, and sense of humor. He made a huge impact on adults and students at BHS. I am sure he is still smiling down on us. My sincere condolences to his family.

To Nancy, Lindsay and Sarah,

It is with deepest sympathy and sadness that I offer my sincere condolences to all of you. Joe was a unique individual with many talents that he used to benefit others. His compassion for people and their circumstances as well as his trademark sense of humor provided all of us with a taste of God's grace. He was able to bring out the best in people as well as to empower them to face and conquer their inner most fears.

As a colleague and a friend I benefited from his level headedness and a desire to do the right thing. I always left a conversation with Joe Guest in a better place than when we began that conversation. I have been blessed by having the opportunity to know him. I will miss him always.

January 21, 2015 | Cheri Cyr Collins - Brunswick, Maine -- Usa

Nancy and family,

I am so sorry to learn that Joe is gone. Although I had not worked with him, even his casual connections from time to time were enough to know of his genuine kind spirit and sense of interest in others. He always had time, - an attribute that made him so effective and respected as he did his work.

I'm sure that Joe's family has many many fond memories to provide comfort at this time.

Mr. Guest helped me deal with High School issues. Years later while living in Brunswick there were a couple of times when he had come into my place of employment in the Portland area and he recognized me and took time to catch up. To hear of his passing this morning makes me a little sad. My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife and family. Rest in peace Mr. Guest.

After Joe retired from the Bath campus of Southern Maine Community College, we kept his office as though he were still there. I felt his gentle presence whenever I sat at his desk. He was a great example of what it meant to put students first.

January 20, 2015 | Peter Blake - Yarmouth, Maine -- USA

Joe was one of nicest gentlemen I ever met. I thoroughly enjoyed working with him and our
annual teacher trips to Sugarloaf. Joe will always have a warm place in my heart. Say hi to Jack Caldwell for me. And as the old Irish Blessing says, "May the road rise to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face.
And rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again.
May God hold you in the hollow of His hand."

January 20, 2015 | Vicki Clark - Brunswick, Maine -- USA

I was so sorry to hear of Mr. Guest's passing. My son Tyler Clark, a former student at BHS, used to go down to Mr. Guest's guidance office during his study hall and they would talk OSU and Cleveland Browns football. I was also honored to have him as a guest in our home at two of our yearly Football opening day parties, and he was a very sweet and kind man. I offer my condolences to his family.

Sincerely, Vicki Clark

I am so sorry for your loss. Mr.Guest made such a positive impact on my life, and was there for me constantly during the years I needed someone most, but was at an age when I didn't realize it! I'm sure many students would say the same thing. I am a better person because of him, and the world is surely a better place because of him. May he rest in peace and be remembered always!

January 20, 2015 | Jane Lienau - Bowdoinham, ME -- USA

Joe was a wonderful counselor. His gentle approach to life made him the perfect person to mediate situations between stressed teachers and students. I found in him something of a mentor in my early years of teaching. He helped me to see past my sense of my own class's importance, always recognizing that there was more to life than this grade or that test. That has helped me shape my teaching. He was a fine man, and I miss him.

January 20, 2015 | Sara Millett Au - Orlando, Fl -- USA

Mr. Guest was a constant at Brunswick High school, a guiding force who was always encouraging. He did a great deal of good in his time there. I will always remember his smile, and the respect he had for us students, on the cusp of adulthood, wanting to make our own decisions but still needing a little help along the way. My condolences on your loss, may he rest in peace.

January 19, 2015 | Sarah Heinemann - Brooklyn, NY -- USA

I moved to Brunswick before my sophomore year of highschool. Mr. Guest helped ease my transition as a new student, and gave me guidance through some tough episodes during my high school experience. He was a wonderful person, and though I graduated many years ago and only knew him briefly, I wanted to be sure his family knew that he touched my life. Thinking of his family at this time.

So very sorry for the loss of Joe. I did not personally know him but grew up with the Huffman family and came to know him through facebook comments from Annette Beagle as a gentle man who was loved very much by his family. He fought for his life as long as he could and he will be extremely missed. RIP, Joe. Prayers and blessings to Nancy, her daughters and the entire family.

January 19, 2015 | Jean Skelton Libby - Brunswick, Maine -- USA

I worked with Joe during his career at BHS. He was a constant source of strength and wisdom in his support of individual student issues, the peer counseling program and my personal situation with domestic violence. His depth of caring and dedication to assisting human relationships was wonderful and memorable but beyond that, it was his humor that really made him sparkle in a way that I will always cherish. You will be missed, Joe. Deepest sympathy to Nancy and family for your loss.
