As a Bowdoin graduate and active alum, I have been at countless events with Al and Phyllis. Diana and I have loved our conversations (always enthusiastic about...whatever!) with Phyllis. She (like her husband) have been consistently warm, good-humored and very interesting about a wide range of topics. We can only imagine how grateful those who met Phyllis through the Curtis Library have been for her contributions to their lives. To Al and the entire family we want to express our sorrow for your loss and gratitude for her life.

Mrs. Fuchs was instrumental in cultivating my love of reading. Each Saturday in the early seventies my sister and I spent time at the library while our mother was grocery shopping. It was Phyllis who saw each week the stack of books I wished to sign out (always over the borrowing limit). I have never forgotten the day she notated on my library card granting me permission to borrow more than the library limit (which I believe was 3 books at the time).
My love of reading was passed onto my children. I can only imaging how many lives she touched with her passion for literature and children.

Phyllis brought so much joy to so many people whether at Bowdoin or Curtis or just around town. Her smile was infectious and her insights always uplifting. Our community has truly lost a wonderful presence. She will be sorely missed. Our hearts go out to Al and her whole extended family and vast circle of friends and admirers. Al and Phyllis were the cutest couple in our town!

Dear Al and family,
Please accept my sincere condolence on your loss of Phyllis who I had the pleasure of meeting at numerous UNE functions. Phyllis was a delightful and classy individual, full of life and vigor and such a pleasure to talk to. Best of all she willingly shared her Al with us. I am so sorry you have lost her. She will be missed.
