Becky & I met Gordon after his retirement, and it was always a pleasure to talk with him. A kind, friendly man with a great laugh. Will always remember that he reached out to me when I was going through a difficult time. RIP

My wife Elizabeth and I host a monthly Zoom meeting for retired Episcopal clergy living in Maine, and Gordon joined us for several of these informal chats,as recently as December. A gentle presence who gave no indication of the work he had done in Lowell. We missed him at our January meeting, and will pass on news of his death when we meet again.

Gordon was a champion for peace-making and the non-violent struggle for social justice. I met him in 1981 when I arrived in Lowell to promote similar efforts within the Catholic parishes of the area, and we soon bonded through ecumenical efforts to improve affordable housing, build racial justice and respond to the scandal of homeless families.
He was a leader in gathering people of faith to found the Lowell Ethnic Covenant, and making justice ministry more than a volunteer concern, hiring a professional organizer and staff to guide our collective efforts. He brought the concerns of the Lowell region to civil and church authorities, offering his prophetic voice on behalf of the suffering poor. His vision lives on in the Merrimack Valley Project, of which he was a foundational leader.
I miss his laughter and his leadership.
