Biography:
West Bath, Maine - Jane Carter Weir, 77, of West Bath, died September 11, 2025 at home.
Jane was born on June 19, 1948, to John Merill and Joyce (Ramsay) Carter.
Jane went to kindergarten in Augusta, Maine in a one-room schoolhouse. She graduated from Uniondale High School, in Uniondale, New York. She attended the University of Maine in Orono and then transferred to North Carolina State University where she received a Bachelor of Arts in History.
Jane was a creative fiber artist who excelled at being a colorist and she taught fiber arts classes for many years. Additionally, she founded Wake Weavers Guild, she was a juried member of Carolina Designer Craftsmen, and she founded and operated Great Yarns, a yarn store in Raleigh, NC, for 18 years. When she moved back to Maine after nearly 40 years in North Carolina she organized fiber tours for Halcyon Yarn in Bath, Maine. She was known for her generous and welcoming hospitality.
Jane was an event coordinator for University of Maine Midcoast Alumni Group and an active participant in town activities in West Bath, ME. She organized a neighborhood knitting group and participated in another knitting group based in Brunswick, ME to satisfy her avid knitting interest and to mentor other knitters.
Jane is survived by her husband Robert (Bob) Weir, sister Nancy Carter (Jim Condon), sister-in-law Ann Ventre, nephews Ian Carter (Megan), Liam Condon (Tara), Ted Ventre (Kristin) and Tommy Ventre (Krissy).
A celebration of Jane’s life will be held on September 25, 2025 at 2pm at the Phippsburg Congregational Church, 10 Church Lane, Phippsburg, ME 04562.
Jane made two suggestions for donations in lieu of flowers:
To the ALS Clinic where Jane was treated. The clinic provides medical services and equipment for ALS patients. Please write your check to Mid Coast Hospital and in the memo line note “Donation for MCH's ALS Clinic in memory of Jane Weir”. Mail to Mid Coast Hospital, Office of Development, PO Box 279, Brunswick, Maine 04011.
To support the University of Maine Midcoast Alumni Group Scholarship Fund. Jane held a leadership role in this group for many years. These donations may be made either online at http://our.umaine.edu/weir or by mailing a check to the University of Maine Foundation, Two Alumni Place, Orono, ME 04469-5792 and note "in memory of Jane Weir" on the memo line.
