Evelyn H. Spencer

Date of Death: February 9, 2026

Date of Birth: June 27, 1935

Biography:

Evelyn H Spencer passed away peacefully on February 9, 2026, partly due to an injury suffered in April of 2025. She lived a long life, full of love, smiles, an ever-growing family, and lots of adventures-with many twists and turns. She knew she had been blessed with many things and her heart was full. She was ready to go home.

Evelyn was born at home in Auburn on June 27, 1935 to Susie Drake Hanscom and Oscar Hanscom. The youngest of six siblings, she was educated in the Auburn School system and graduated from ELHS in 1955.

Following graduation, Evelyn “Evie” worked for local businesses for a few years before she met the love of her life, Robert Spencer, at a local cook-out. They dated, then married on April 27, 1957. Their four children followed shortly thereafter.

Evelyn was an excellent cook, stating she came by it “rightly,” learning from her mother, Susie. These life skills made her the perfect hostess for many family and business-related gatherings. At one point, she joined forces with her sister, Eleanor using their cooking skills to provide lunch to the hungry students in Auburn schools. She was also a skilled seamstress and crafter, making beautiful dolls and Christmas ornaments.

Evelyn was pre-deceased by her parents, her husband, her siblings, several nieces and nephews and a son-in-law.

Mom is greatly missed by her children, Ronald and his wife Margaret of Casselberry FL; Linda Detwyler and her husband Robert of Greer SC, Patricia of Durham and Judith of Auburn; 7 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, many extended family members as well as her feline babies Barney, Charlie, Scooter and cuddle friends Trouble and Sherman.

The family would like to thank Andwell Hospice and Bolster Heights Nursing Facility for their skilled and compassionate care of Evelyn during her short stay as well as the staff on M4 at CMMC. Words cannot express our gratitude.

A Celebration of Life will be held in the Spring, at a date and time to be announced.
