Joseph Lawrence Prendergast
Date of Death: January 24, 2026
Date of Birth: March 31, 1942
Biography:
Brunswick - Joseph Lawrence Prendergast died unexpectedly on Jan. 24, 2026 just two weeks
after his beloved wife Carole succumbed to a long illness.
Born in New York City, he was a graduate of St. John’s Prep., Fordham College (BA), and
Adelphi University (MBA). He served as an Army field artillery officer and during his South
Korean deployment, he won competitions with ROK & USA combined batteries. Of all the jobs
that Larry had, he loved speech writing the most. In 1968, he married Carole Audean (Coursey)
Prendergast, and they spent 57 years together. They lived in Atlanta, Ridgewood, and Nashville
before retiring to Maine.
He is survived by their sons John (and his wife Erin, and their family) and Neil (and his wife
Megan, and their family), and his sister Nora. He was predeceased by Carole, his sisters Anne
and Helen, and his brother James.
Larry and Carole loved the outdoors. Together, they volunteered to lead hikes in Maine and New
Hampshire for the Appalachian Mountain Club. He was a longtime Rotarian, served his
condominium board, and volunteered at People Plus. He enjoyed auditing Bowdoin classes,
reading, travel, art museums, theater, and listening to classical and jazz. He was curious about
the world and always wanted to advance his mind. Larry loved his wife and family, Maine, Arturo
O’Farrill, George V. Higgins, the New York Rangers, Jets, and Mets, a glass of beer, Fairway
Market, a 50/50 raffle, and a kitchen with everyone contributing. The Brunswick community gave
him close, supportive friends with whom he had many plans for a robust future.
There will be a Catholic service and a celebration of life for Larry and Carole, and family and
friends will be notified.
