Jean Anita Powers
Date of Death: June 15, 2025
Date of Birth: April 13, 1946
Biography:
Brunswick- Jean Anita Powers was born April 13, 1944, in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, the youngest of three children to Albert O and Anna K Carr. Soon after, they moved to Mere Point Road in Brunswick, and Jean was proud to say she remained in Brunswick for the rest of her life.
Jean had an interest in auto racing early on, meeting W Richard Powers Sr (Dickie) while he was tinkering on his race car for Beech Ridge Speedway. They were married November 21, 1966.
Jean also caught the farming bug from Dickie and was the driving force behind the family farm. She led the daily charge to pick and pack 20,000 eggs a day, including holidays, from the farm’s 30,000 chickens. She also managed the farm’s beef marketing by arranging the sale of local freezer beef from the herd to consumers. Jean also made sure all the extended farm family was fed and taken care of during the many long days on the farm. While tending to the farm Jean also worked part time at Delekto Brothers in Auburn in the parts department to help offset the constant cost of equipment repair.
After the farm operations slowed, Jean worked at Eastland Shoe in Freeport in accounts receivable for 19 years. Her tenacious personality allowed her to be very successful in getting and keeping accounts current.
Upon retirement Jean took her passion and love for The Town of Brunswick and started an email watchdog group of town politics to keep taxpayers informed of town spending habits.
Jean was diagnosed with cancer in 2021 and true to form, took it head on while caring for Dickie during his last years. Jean and her family cannot thank the doctors and oncology staff at Topsham Cancer Center enough for their tireless attention and care. Jean passed on June 15, 2025 at Midcoast Hospital after a short and final battle.
Jean was predeceased by her parents, her sister Joanne (Cushing), and her husband Dickie. She is survived by her brother Jon (and spouse Nancy), brother-in-law Steve Cushing, her cousin John Koch (and spouse Pam) and her son Rick (and spouse Sarah and grandchildren Abby and Emily). Jean also had a special friend, Peggy Page who was always there for her.
Per Jean’s wishes, there will be no services. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to CHANS www.chanshomehealth.com in her memory.
