Betty Jean Lugner

Date of Death: August 4, 2025

Date of Birth: June 27, 1936

Biography:

Betty Jean Lugner, 89, of Auburn, Maine, passed away on August 4, 2025. She was born on June 27, 1936, in Lewiston, Maine, to Kenneth and Julia Smith, and was raised by her father and stepmother, Maryette Smith, who was like a mother to her and guided her with love through the years.
In the 1970s, Betty enjoyed working as a day care provider out of her home, where she cared for children whose families became an extension of her own.

She found happiness in simple pleasures like camping on the lake in Otisfield, sitting in front of her RV enjoying the campfire, playing card games with family and friends, square dancing, and attending "picking parties" with live banjo music. Betty also loved cooking, road trips, and spending time with her beloved husband, Nils Lugner, with whom she shared many happy years.

Betty was predeceased by her parents, her husband Nils, her brother Lawrence Smith, and her sister Glynis Lob.

She is survived by her children, Elliot Steward, Cheryl Landry, and Michael Lugner; six grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and stepchildren, Peter Lugner and Susan Tyler.

Betty's feisty spirit and playful sense of humor sometimes caught people off guard, yet they were among her most endearing qualities. She will be dearly missed and her spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the Odd Fellows Home, Clover Health Care team, and the amazing Beacon Hospice team for their compassionate care.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Clover Activities Department in Betty's memory.

Please send it to Megan Stevenson, Administrator and designate to the department you'd like to donate to.
