Biography:
Norman Charles Kenney, 94, a lifelong resident of Bath, Maine, passed away peacefully on December 31, 2025, at his home he built with his father in 1951, with loved ones by his side. Born on December 14, 1931, in Bath. Norman dedicated his life to his family, Christianity, Bath fire department, and the Maine Maritime Museum.
Norman grew up attending the Nazarene Church and played a pivotal role in helping build the Bath Nazarene Church in 1955. His spiritual foundation remained a guiding force throughout his life.
In 1951 he married his high school sweetheart Virginia Anne (Baker) Kenney and together they shared 3 children and a bonus child.
Norman began his career with the Bath Fire Department in 1955 as a driver. Over the decades, through unwavering commitment and leadership, he rose through the ranks and was promoted to Chief from 1976 until his retirement in 1981. He then was employed by the Maine Maritime Museum until 2001 and stayed a member for many years after.
Norman had a deep love for history especially that of his beloved hometown. He was a walking repository of Bath’s past and took immense joy in sharing stories and facts about the community. His passion extended beyond words; he actively took part in restoring an old fire engine with the Box 19 Club, preserving not only machinery but also memories.
In addition to sharing many historical facts, in his recent years his favorite story was sharing the reason behind the nickname “Fox Slayer.” May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him.
Norman also known as “Papa” to many, is survived by his daughter, Darlene Compton, and a bonus daughter Barbie Nusbaum; fourteen grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren. Preceded by his wife, Virginia Kenney; brothers, Warren, and Donald Kenney; sons Steven and James Kenney and son in law Barry Compton.
A Celebration of Life will be held on April 18, 2026, a later date; so, he can lay to rest along the side of his wife, Virginia. Details will be made available once arranged.
