Biography:
Jane Elizabeth Hathaway (O’Toole) 68 of Bath, Maine passed away peacefully on September 23, 2025, in Scarborough, Maine following a brief illness. Born on April 17th, 1957, in San Antonio, Texas, she was the daughter of Harold and Alverna Patterson. As a self-described “army brat” who attended 12 schools in 12 years, Jane graduated from Ayer High School in Ayer, Massachusetts, in1975.
As a young woman, Jane began her career as clerk for Sanders Associates. While working she earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Southern New Hampshire. She built an impressive career in tech marketing at Lockheed Martin, BAE Systems, Space Tech and Matrix, before concluding her career as a consultant. During these years she made several lifelong friends and meaningful connections.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Jane was known for her vibrant spirit, humor, strong-willed compassion and zest for life. She found great pleasure in cooking, entertaining family and friends, gardening, knitting, caring for beloved pets and dancing to live music, particularly with Mark. She also enjoyed traveling and exploring, especially with her nieces and nephews who held a special place in her heart. One of her most favorite places to visit was her family homestead in Grates Cove, Newfoundland.
She took immense pride in reaching her ten years of Sobriety this past year and gave back by sponsoring several women through Alcoholics Anonymous.
Jane was predeceased by her parents and by her late husband, Austin O’Toole. She is survived by her husband, Mark Hathaway of Bath; stepdaughter, Molly Hanley and husband, Nate of Dresden; granddaughter, Isla Hanley; sister, Linda Wood and husband Joe of Anderson, South Carolina; brother, Steve Patterson of Toano, Virginia; as well as several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Jane’s life will be held on October 25th, 2025, from 01:00 to 04:00 PM at the Kennebec Tavern & Restaurant, 119 Commercial St. Bath, Maine 04530.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough, ME or the Midcoast Humane Society of Brunswick, ME.
