Mary Elizabeth Fake

Date of Death: May 5, 2025

Date of Birth: August 29, 1926

Biography:

Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Landon Fake died peacefully on May 5, 2025. She was born August 29, 1926, in Sharon, Connecticut. Betty lived an active life and was still a respected and beloved elder in her church and community, leaving a legacy of compassion and strength.
She trained as a Registered Nurse at Bishop Memorial School of Nursing in Pittsfield, Massachusetts during World War II (1944-47). She continued nursing until 1954 when her children were born. In 1974, she renewed her nursing license and worked as a nurse until 1996.
Betty married William (Bill) J. Fake in 1949. They lived in New York, Wisconsin, Vermont, and Maine. She was active in the communities in which she lived, serving on committees and boards of schools, library, public television, and her church.
Betty was a woman ahead of her time, willing to do what many of her generation would not consider. Despite her trepidation of travel and volunteering, she was determined to make a difference. In 1971, she trained to be a volunteer Emergency Medical Technician to serve a rural Vermont area. After Bill’s death in 1982, she volunteered to provide short-term medical assistance in rural Maine, Appalachia, India, and the Philippines.
Betty was active in the United Methodist Church for over 65 years. She served in multiple capacities, as Lay Leader, president of United Methodist Women, board member of her local church, Maine and New England Conferences, and the National Board of Global Ministries. She continued to be a voice of reason and compassion in the church until her death.
She lived in Maine for the last 53 years of her life. Betty was a life-long learner and travelled extensively in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, and South America. She was always interested in experiencing different places, cultures, and people. Her life was well-lived.
Betty is survived by her children: Diane Carman and husband Ray LaMothe, Landon Fake, wife Margaret Haberman, Cindy Fake, Tom Fake, wife Lorna Fake, and her grandchildren Anna Haberman-Fake and husband Rob Altimus, Kelsey LaMothe, Hannah Fake, Cathryn Haberman-Fake, and Angus Fake.
Betty’s Celebration of Life will be held June 14 at 2:00 PM at the United Methodist Church of Auburn, Maine. A reception will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, please donate to UMCOR, Good Shepherd Food Bank of Maine, or United Methodist City Mission.
