Huntington "Hunt" Blatchford

Date of Death: June 23, 2025

Date of Birth: March 29, 1937

Biography:

Huntington “Hunt” Blatchford, 88, of Yarmouth, Maine — Legendary Salesman, Master Conversationalist, and Really Nice Guy — Has Moved on to His Next Great Adventure

Hunt Blatchford — husband, father, Grampy, Marine, storyteller, and tireless New England road warrior — passed away peacefully at home on June 23, 2025, in Yarmouth, Maine. He was 88 years old and still filling the room with his warm smile.

Born in Portland, Maine, on March 29, 1937, Hunt grew up in Wellesley, Massachusetts, where he developed his lifelong knack for making friends and met the love of his life, Sharon Baker. They married on March 28, 1959, and spent the next 66 years writing a story full of laughter, love, and the occasional, “Have I ever told you about the time…”

He graduated from Governor Dummer Academy in 1956, proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps, and later earned his business degree from Babson College in 1963. He returned to Maine in 1969 to take on the role of Sales Manager at G.H. Bass, kicking off a long career in the shoe business — though to Hunt, it was never just about shoes. It was about people.

Wherever Hunt found himself, he could spark a conversation that felt like you’d known him forever. He had friends in every New England town — he never met a stranger. He was a true conversationalist: genuinely interested, quick with a laugh, and armed with a bottomless trove of jokes and stories (some of which might even have been true).

Hunt had a gift for making people feel welcome, listened to, and appreciated. That was his real talent — his superpower. And if a story made you laugh, even better. His timing was impeccable, his jokes were legendary, and his ability to remember names and faces was almost eerie.

He was a consummate Grampy who loved entertaining his grandchildren with his magic trick box and his favorite tool — the Whoopee cushion. He was an active member of the First Parish Congregational Church of Yarmouth and had a secret side gig every December that involved a little… Ho, ho, ho, a red suit, and a white beard.

He stocked a backyard trout pond like a Maine Game Warden. Each spring, he’d invite neighborhood kids over to “wet a line” — and more than one caught their very first fish under his watchful, encouraging eye. When winter set in, “Bass Pond” became the neighborhood skating rink, and Hunt was the Head Ice Keeper.
