I am profoundly saddened to hear about the passing of one of my most precious, loyal and brilliant students, mon cher Michael.
He was an integral part of my French classes and our French Club at Kalani High School. My memories of Michael as a vested French student are strong especially when he assumed the role as lead petitioner to save my position as the junior French teacher so I wouldn't be transferred to another school. He was a true francophile making painstaking efforts to bake croissants for a club gathering only to lament that after many hours of prepping, the croissants were consumed in only minutes. But they were delicious!
We communicated only a few times after he graduated but I could never forget the indelible imprint on my heart.

I met Michael in the summer of 1983 at the Monteux School in Hancock. We shared a house with five other musicians. I remember a fisherman up the road knocked on our door, frantic because one of the lobsters in his lobster pound had died. He begged us to buy some lobsters and said if we could pay $1 per lobster it would really help him out. It was Michael's idea to buy all of the lobsters and invite the entire orchestra over to our house for dinner. We made a dumbwaiter out of a basket and clothesline to lower the cooked lobsters from our second floor kitchen to the party in the backyard. Michael was brilliant on the podium and was in awe of Maestro Bruck. I was so happy to learn that Michael had become the director of the Monteux School. The school was in excellent hands. He left this world way too soon. Peace to Joseph and their family.

Dear Family,
I wish to extend to you my deepest condolences on this tragic loss. I am a former member of the Nittany Valley Symphony (from way, way back) who never had the opportunity to play under Michael's baton, but my father did have the good fortune, for literally decades, to do so and always had nothing but the most laudatory things to say about his brilliance as a conductor. Please know that you are in my thoughts during this difficult time.
