"Sam" Greene had a great impact on my life from the time I arrived at SSA Senior School in the fall of 1967 on an English Speaking Union one year scholarship. In those days transatlantic travel was a rarity for UK schoolboys and I was in great trepidatation about the forthcoming challenges - personal and educational. Mr Green met me soon after I arrived and immediately put me at ease, assuring me it would be a wonderful experience - and it was was! He did however "keep an eye on me" all through the year and on a number of occasions took me to one side and offered valuable advice and guidance. The year was memorable in many ways but, without doubt, it would not been as enjoyable and rewarding as it was without his "mentorship". Many thanks Mr Greene. RIP

Dear Greene Family
Please accept my condolences at the passing of Mr. Greene. I was an original "Shady Lady" and can say that Shady Side and Mr. Greene changed my life by allowing the admission of women. He was a welcoming presence who taught his students to accept nothing less than excellence. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

I graduated from Shady Side Academy in 1966 and my mother worked as the Middle School Secretary in the years that Mr. Green was President. I know that she and Mr. Mancosh, the Middle School Headmaster, had a high regard for Mr Green and all that he did for SSA. Although I had moved, I am very glad and pleased that SSA decided to become coed and I have a great regard for the school that it has become. I realize from Mr. Cangiano's message that the transformation was in large part envisioned by Mr. Green. My condolences to the family on the passing of such a fine man. Although I met on one or two occasions, I can know what kind of man he was by the school that SSA has become.

It is a small world. In addition to being my algebra II teacher at Mount Hermon, Sam was also my cross country coach along with Fred McVeigh. Interesting enough, I was the cross country coach of his son-in-law, Kevin Kearns, husband of Julie Greene, at Cranbrook School in Michigan. After returning to New England and Northfield Mount Hermon in 1987 I enjoyed seeing and chatting with Sam over the years when he returned to campus for various events including reunions. I believe that Sam is the last of the 50's era teachers at Mount Hermon. I was saddened to learn of his passing and as class secretary for the class of 1956, have passed the information on to my classmates.

Sam, with his infectious laugh, will be sorely missed by all of us who knew him at NMH school. He was my mentor, teacher, class advisor and cross-country coach. We remember him returning to our 50th class reunion in 2008- and I remember speaking with him in Brunswick not that long ago. What a great guy! My fondest memories link back to our cross-country practices and races when he, along with Fred McVeigh would step out from behind the bushes and say something like, 'Mr. Stone (never John), I think you could step up the pace a bit'. He was always Mr Greene and we Mr's as well!!

Great man, great legacy, great loss. One of my treasured mentors at NMH whose presence in my life endures.

I am so sorry to hear of the death of Sam Greene. As John Stone said in his NMH obituary, he was a truly great guy.

My favorite memory of him was that he got a group of us to go out together to go out on the athletic field behind Crosley to watch the passage of the first Sputnik in October 1957. We stood out there in the dark and watched what looked like a slow-moving star pass across the sky and talked about the Russians and how they had beat us on this one. I don't remember anybody saying that this was the beginning of the space age, but that's certainly what it was.
