July 6, 2023 | Fred Mogul - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania -- United States

More than occasionally, I wonder what my life would look like if I had not had Gerard Dorian as my teacher, mentor and friend. Mr. Dorian (I always felt strange calling him "Gerard," even decades into adulthood) was by far the greatest educator I ever knew. I was adrift in my early teens, and something about the way he taught, and the way he spoke about the inner life and the life of letters and culture resonated with me. He identified in my soul a spark waiting to be kindled. Being valued by him meant the world to me; it altered my trajectory, not only during high school but beyond. We didn't do a great job staying in touch in later years, but when we got together in Bath, I always left him feeling that my soul had been refreshed. I'm sorry not to have heard about his passing away sooner, but I'm glad I got a chance to see him not too long ago and thank him for everything and tell him I loved him. Godspeed, Gerard. Would that I had it in me to write a proper ode honoring your contribution to the world, but I can only borrow from Keats, whose romance you embodied for me, and always will:

When old age shall this generation waste,
Thou shalt remain, in midst of other woe
Than ours, a friend to man, to whom thou say'st,
"Beauty is truth, truth beauty,—that is all
Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know."

Gerard was my English teacher for three years (1962-65)in Port Jervis, NY. He was by far the most important teacher I ever had and he had a great influence on my life. After I went off to college and he left Port Jervis, I lost touch with him for over 35 years. And then quite fortuitously I found out that he had been living in Bath and Brunswick at the same time I was here. I am sure we were in the same venues many times but, of course, did not recognize each other. Once we reconnected, we got together occasionally and I was able to tell him about the impact he had on my life. I am very sorry to learn of his death and regret I did not see him more in his last years.
