February 10, 2023 | William Gordon Hill - Dunnellon, Florida -- Marion

I have not known any of the family from the past or my father, Gordon Wesley Hill. I approach 80 years of age and like reading and hearing about the family. I have a brother Donald Walter Hill, 81 years old soon. Thanks to all!

Visiting the farm in Durham with my parents was a delight for me - although Uncle Frank and Aunt Lucille did have at least one non-delightful event indirectly involving me. I may have been about 11 or 12 at the time.

Uncle Frank had a bean field that was being bothered by woodchucks. He sent some traps one day to try to catch the scoundrels. I got up early the next morning to see what had been caught. The first couple of traps were empty, but one trap had captured a black and white "woodchuck." Uncle Frank was sprayed when trying to release the poor animal (a skunk). For the rest of the day, Aunt Lucille had to have Uncle Frank maintain a safe distance - upwind if possible - from the rest of us.

Aunt Lucille, I'll forever hold a special place in my heart for you and Uncle Frank. The memories of when my grandmother, Lorraine, would bring me up to the farm when I was growing up will never fade. The lessons I learned while helping you and Uncle Frank helped to make me who I am today. To my family near and far, my condolences and prayers to you all, love Joshua

"If something makes you sad when it ends, it must have been pretty wonderful when it was happening!"
It was pretty wonderful to enjoy Lucille's friendship. We sure had some infamous adventures over the past 39 years!
Trips, cruises to the Caribbean, sleepovers and Campfire cookouts with us Girls at the cottage in Harpswell (thanks Jo Dupal and Frank Bowie for coming up with our name!),Canasta marathons into the wee hours, only interrupted to check the Red Sox score; Lucille was at home whether bringing in the cows, or dressed to the nines on formal night on a Caribbean cruise. (Eric, she loved the beaded jacket you bought for her in Japan). She'd give you the shirt off her back, or whip off her bra for a scavenger hunt! She'd drive us from the Brownsville Junction train "station" at night to get something to eat even after she had just taken out her contacts! She'd buy $200 worth of beauty products after a spa demo on a cruise ship! Even though she was the oldest member of our group, she was the youngest at heart. She was the first one to have a desktop computer, smartphone, ipad, and know how to navigate them better than us young ones! She watched her favorite soaps, Y&R and Bold & Beautiful on her phone!
When I visited with her two days before she died, she was still reminiscing about our many Campfire Girls adventures!
That day a red male Cardinal appeared at the bird feeder outside her room; I'd like to think it was Frank telling her he was waiting for her in heaven. I'd like to think that I will see her there too!
"Grief is the price we pay for Love!"❤

February 4, 2023 | Charlie Adler - Attleboro, Massachusetts -- USA

My Aunt Lucille was the youngest of four daughters born in Taunton, Massachusetts, to Florence Witherell and Charles Williams. Everyone in my generation benefitted from the close ties of love that held these four sisters together throughout their lives. Those close ties extended to the many Witherell and Williams cousins as well. With Aunt ‘Cille’s passing, everyone of her generation in the family tree is gone and we must carry on without them.
To remember Aunt ‘Cille is to remember Uncle Frank, his sister Dorothy, and their genial father Leon, and the times when we visited them, and our cousins Jeffrey, Betsy, and Eric at the farm. Cookouts on the hill, herding cows into the barn, braving the hazards of walking behind a row of cows as they waited to be milked, picking blueberries, seeing mechanization come to the farm with the purchase of a new combine—these are just some of the memories. We all appreciated how much work it took to live off the land--Uncle Frank coming in for dinner after a long day’s labor, and then maybe more chores before finally lighting his pipe at day’s end, Aunt ‘Cille canning the fruits, vegetables, and pickles that would be stocked on shelves for the winter.

Durham has lost another piece of history. Frank and Lucille were some of the first people that we met when we moved to Durham many years ago. The memories our children have at Bowie Farm will never be forgotten. Lucille, you will be greatly missed. Say hi to Frank fir us.

February 4, 2023 | Rachel Lacasse - Durham, Maine -- Androscoggin

To all the family my sincere condolences. So many memories at the farm years ago. Prayers for comfort from all the wonderful memories you have.
Love Rachel

February 4, 2023 | Jane Donelon - Brunswick, Me. -- USA

I taught with Lucille for many years in Pownal School. I was happy to re-connect with her years later at our Teacher's breakfasts. She gave me one of her beautiful quilts which I treasure. I'm glad her life was so full and happy.

February 4, 2023 | Ted Walsh - Portland, ME -- United States

I wish to extend my condolences to Lucille's family on her passing. I worked with Lucille for many years at Pownal Elememtary School as a fellow teacher and as principal. Lucille was a devoted teacher who worked diligently to serve the needs of each child in her care. She joined fellow retired staff members frequently at the teacher's monthly breakfasts, recalling past students and good times at SAD #62. As her obituary states, Lucille had a rich and varied life and a beautiful loving family. My she rest in peace.
