Normand Y. Roy, 87, passed away on August 7, 2026, following a long and hardworking life devoted to his family, his country, his trade, and helping others.
Normand was born on October 25, 1938, in Saint-Quentin, New Brunswick, Canada, where he attended local schools. In 1958, at the age of 19, he moved to Lewiston, Maine.
After working briefly for his brother, Normand entered the United States Army. During his military service, he became a naturalized United States citizen and served as a heavy-truck mechanic. He was honorably discharged in 1964.
Following his military service, Normand moved to Hartford, Connecticut, where he worked as an automobile mechanic at Lipman Motors. On December 26, 1964, he married Lorraine, beginning a marriage that would span more than 61 years.
Normand's cousin and close friend, Rodger Roy, taught him the electrical trade and helped him become a member of IBEW Local 35 in Hartford. After briefly trying life on the family farm in 1973, Normand returned to Connecticut in 1974 and went on to work as a union electrician for approximately 30 years. Later in his career, he became an electrician for the State of Connecticut prison system, where he worked until retirement.
Retirement, however, was only a technical description of Normand's employment status. It certainly did not mean that he stopped working.
After retiring, Normand built his own home in Auburn, Maine, and continued helping family, friends, and neighbors with electrical work, construction, renovations, and repairs. He was a man who knew how to work, how to fix things, and how to put those skills to use for others.
Normand's life was also an American success story. He came to the United States as a young man, served his adopted country, became an American citizen, mastered a skilled trade, worked hard for decades, raised a family, built his own home, and continued helping others long after retirement.
Normand is survived by his loving wife, Lorraine, with whom he shared more than 61 years of marriage; his son, Stephen Roy, and Stephen's wife, Theresa, of Oxford, Connecticut; and his brothers, Laurent Roy of Lewiston, Maine, and Wilfrid Roy of Quebec; as well as extended family and many friends.
Normand leaves behind a legacy of hard work, perseverance, service, and generosity. The work he accomplished with his hands will remain for years to come, as will the memories held by the family, friends, and neighbors whose lives he touched.
