Paul Alan Hamilton

Paul Alan Hamilton

It is with a heavy heart that the family of Paul Alan Hamilton announces his death. He fought and won many battles, but lost his battle against COVID-19 on December 31, 2020.

The supportive Mid Coast ICU staff made it possible for family members to be with Paul during his final hours. They also made it possible for his daughter, Nicole, and his best friend, Susan Lamb, to communicate with him via live video.

Paul was born in Portland, Maine on June 4, 1948 to Jay G. Hamilton Jr. and Nellie Perry Hamilton. He spent his childhood helping on the family farm and working on his father’s milk route. He spent a large part of his summer at his grandfather’s cottage on New Meadows River.Paul was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Conflict. He was a member of Company D, 1st Battalion 6th Infantry, Americal Division. He was a Bronze Star with “V” Device, Army Commendation Medal with OLC, and Purple Heart recipient. His fellow soldiers have expressed their sadness for our loss. Several have informed us that Paul’s quick actions and bravery were the reason they left Vietnam alive. Paul received a battlefield promotion to Sergeant on August 18, 1970, when he was wounded. An excerpt from the award reads, “ During the lengthy battle, he refused medical treatment or evacuation until the enemy had been routed and all his injured comrades had been extracted. Through his timely and courageous actions, he contributed to the safe withdrawal of his fellow soldiers and served as an inspiration to his entire unit.” His experiences in Vietnam altered his life forever. He suffered from PTSD and substance abuse for many years.

Paul had a distinguished boxing career. He won 20 of his 22 professional matches. His speed and grace in the ring were a sight to behold.

He was employed by Wright-Pierce as a surveyor. He also worked as an industrial and commercial surveyor on union jobs.

Paul attended Brunswick High School. After the Army he attended William and Mary and the University of Southern Maine. He was a lifelong scholar. He possessed a prodigious vocabulary and a retentive mind. If he read it he remembered it.

Paul and his brother, Ronald, vacationed together in Hawaii. Paul enjoyed beach life, surfing and sightseeing. He owned an extensive collection of Hawaiian shirts, and dreamed of vacationing in Hawaii again.

He was accomplished at cribbage, scrabble, backgammon, pool, cross country skiing, fishing, boating and gardening. He never missed a Jeopardy episode. Paul was able to complete the New York crossword puzzle in ink.

He possessed a quick mind and a quick temper. He passed his fearless approach to life to his daughter, Nicole. She, like her father, is never dull.

Paul was predeceased by brothers John P. Hamilton, Ronald D. Hamilton and Wayne M. Hamilton. He is survived by brothers Jay G. Hamilton lll, Edward Hamilton and his wife Suzanne, and Randall Hamilton and his wife Elizabeth. He also leaves behind sisters Carol Durgin and Martha Hamilton, all of Brunswick. He loved his nieces and nephews and they loved him. He taught them all to speak Donald Duck.

Paul’s family would like to thank the Mid Coast Hospital ICU doctors and nurses. We appreciate the excellent care Paul received and the compassion extended to his family.

In closing his family would like to say, “ We admired his bravery and amazing intelligence. We didn’t always understand him, but we always loved him.”

Paul Whitney Austin

Paul Whitney Austin

Augusta, Maine – Paul Whitney Austin, 88, went home to be with the Lord on December 26, 2020 at the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta.  He was surrounded in love by his family and friends.

Paul was born in Unity, Maine to Lillian F. and Raymond G. Austin on May 18, 1932.  The oldest of four children, Paul attended Thorndike Grammar School and graduated from Freedom Academy in 1951.  He enjoyed fishing and hunting around his hometown of Thorndike and shared many special moments with his children teaching them the art of stream fishing whenever he could.   Upon his graduation from Freedom Academy in 1951, Paul moved to Bath, Maine and began working for the Hyde Windlass Corporation.  While living in Bath, he met Laura Joy Palmer and the two were married just nine weeks later on February 9, 1952.  He enlisted in the Air Force in 1952, and shortly thereafter, he and his new bride moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming for basic training.  Paul advanced to the rank of E-4 and remained at Francis E. Warren Airforce Base in Cheyenne for the duration of his time in the military.  The couple returned home to Maine in 1956, and Paul went back to work at the Hyde Windlass Corporation.  He later transferred to Bath Iron Works (BIW), where he remained until 1970.  Following his time at BIW, Paul's love of cars drew him to numerous positions in the automobile industry, working for multiple companies in a variety of positions until his retirement.

In 1981, Paul moved to Lakeland, Florida and spent his days walking the neighborhood, while taking time to stop and talk to all of his neighbors.  He loved to socialize and talk to everyone, and he especially enjoyed taking his beloved dog Buffy for a long walk in the warm Florida sunshine.  In 2006, the couple returned to Maine one final time to be near family as Laura battled cancer.  Paul was predeceased by Laura Joy Austin in March of 2011, shortly after the couple celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary.  In life, Paul had the fortune of not just finding the love of his life once, but twice.  In 2015, he married Marilyn J. Chipman and the two resided in Topsham before moving to Augusta in 2017.  Paul and his entire family are grateful for Marilyn's unwavering love and care for him, even after his medical needs became so great that he had to remain at the Maine Home for Veterans in early 2020.

Paul is survived by his wife Marilyn of Augusta; his daughters: Brenda G. Rider and husband Jewel of Brunswick, and Kim S. Hanscom and husband John of Bowdoin; and a son, Dr. Paul W. Austin Jr., and wife Lisa of Norwell, Massachusetts. In addition, Paul is survived by his sisters Virginia Clark of Albion, and Sylvia Elliot of Oswego, New York.  He was predeceased by a brother, Earnest E. Austin of Lyman in 1996.  Paul cherished and was so incredibly proud of his grandchildren: Christopher, Tammie, Sara, Emily, Danielle, Meghan, Bradley, and Brandon.  But most especially, his face lit up whenever he had a visit from one of his 20 great grandchildren.

Paul had a fierce love for his family and where he came from, and that love for them and his hometown never faded.  He deeply loved his children and grandchildren, and he was proud of all their accomplishments.  He was intensely committed to maintaining connections with family and friends.  Family, Thorndike Grammar School, and Freedom Academy reunions were the highlight of his year and he scheduled his summers around them.  His gentle smile, quick wit, and love for friends and family were the hallmarks of his life and will be remembered for generations to come.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, January 9, 2021 at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, 496 Lisbon Road, Lisbon Falls, ME with Reverend James Lowe officiating.  Please be advised that the number of individuals allowed to attend will be limited per State of Maine COVID regulations.  If you plan to attend the service in person, a negative COVID test is recommended, but not mandated.  CDC and Department of Health Regulations will be followed, which require appropriate social distancing, wearing of cloth masks, and handwashing/sanitizing that best ensure everyone's safety.  Graveside services and full military honors will be held later this spring. Edith Ardell Wyman Parker

Edith Ardell Wyman Parker

Edith Ardell Wyman Parker left this world peacefully on December 2, 2020 in Harpswell at the age of 92 surrounded by her family. Edith was born January 4, 1928 in Augusta to Earl and Lena Wyman. She went on to be educated in the Augusta Schools and graduated from Cony High School in 1946. From there she went on to meet the person who made her soul shine, Donald Parker, and they married October 13, 1951. Together they had two children, Deborah and William. Throughout their marriage they experienced many adventures full of national and international travel and social events. Edith was a strong, determined woman, who experienced so much in life, but she considered her greatest accomplishment to be her family.

Growing up on a dairy farm instilled a strong work ethic in Edith and she spoke fondly of her time as a “working girl” as a secretary for the State of Maine, where she worked in several departments, but ended her time there as the secretary to the DIrector of Licensing at the Maine State Liquor Commission . She stepped into retirement before she intended in 1971 due to a battle with cervical cancer. This was the first of 2 battles with cancer she won, the second, a battle with ovarian cancer occurring in 1999. In her younger days Edith was a Past Noble Grand in the International Association of Rebekah Assemblies, a Lifetime Member of the Queen Esther Chapter of Eastern Star, and was involved in the Augusta Assembly 10 of Rainbow Girls. Later in life she was a member of the Lady Shrine. She enjoyed working in both the peri mutuel offices and ticketing booth annually at the Fryeburg Fair from the early 1990s-2011. Although she retired at an early age, she was always busy working around the house at the lake, caring for her grandchildren, or preparing her cards for mailing. She never missed a birthday, anniversary or other holiday.

She was a social person always eager to chat on the phone, engage in a late night card game, host a dinner or party at her home, or later in life just go for a car ride and chat. She cherished family gatherings and she made sure she was present for every single one. Invites to spend time at “the lake” were always open to family and friends. Edith, or Nana, as she was affectionately known by many, loved to listen to all the adventures of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and would zealously share the stories she heard with anyone who would lend an ear. She loved to travel around to various sporting events and extracurricular activities that her grandchildren and great-grandchildren participated in to show her support. Her strong commitment to her family will be carried in their hearts forever.

Edith was predeceased by her husband Donald Parker and siblings Evelyn Jackson, Marion Goodrich, Virginia Wyman, James Wyman, and Patty Parker. She is survived by her daughter, Deborah Wolfenden and her husband Robert of Harpswell and her son William Parker and his wife, Terri, of Augusta. In addition to her children, she is survived by 7 grandchildren, 1 step granddaughter, 12 great-grandchildren and 1 step great-granddaughter in addition to several nieces and nephews. She was deeply loved by many.

A celebration of her Edith’s life will take place in the spring of 2021. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Oxford County Agricultural Fair, PO Box 193, Norway, Maine 04268

Anna Verrill Chandler DeMunn

Anna Verrill Chandler DeMunn

Cumberland Foreside - Anna Verrill Chandler DeMunn passed away on December 17 at age 102 after a long and wonderful life.   She was blessed with good health, close family and friends, gratitude and contentment right to the end.  She was a lifelong “Mainer.”  Smart, practical, self-sufficient and stylish, she would say, "When you’re from Maine, why would you go anywhere else?” “

Born on August 11, 1918, in Westbrook, Maine, Anna was the daughter of Albert and Mary Davis Verrill.  She held her own in an active and loving family:  Albert, the oldest, then Virginia, Tom, Anna, Herbert, and Jack.

After graduating from Westbrook High in 1936, she went on to University of Maine, majoring in Home Economics and enjoying merchandizing internships in Portland and at Macy’s in New York City.  At UM she met her dear Bill Chandler, a serious engineering student.  They married in 1941.

Their first home was in Ridgewood, New Jersey, where Bill worked on development of airplane engines during the war.  Anna said, “The first five years of our married life were both terrible and wonderful.”  Anna’s dear mother died two days after Pearl Harbor, followed by the arrival of their first daughter, Peggy, then Cally.

After the war, they moved back to Maine to raise their family, adding Jane and Barbara. They had fallen in love with a New England farmhouse in Cumberland Center and made the most of living in a small town.  Active in the schools and the four girls’ activities, they enjoyed the Maine outdoors with family ski weekends, camping and canoeing. They planted an apple orchard and large vegetable gardens. As the girls were leaving home, they fostered six-year-old Andy.

Bill and Anna were active in the community.  Anna was particularly proud of her volunteer involvement.  She helped start Girl Scouting in Cumberland.  She was head of the Cumberland/Falmouth Health Council, an officer of the Junior League of Portland and the Cumberland County United Way, and President of the Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary.  Later, with the older girls in college, she took a job “holding down the fort” as secretary at Greely Institute.  She continued to enjoy University of Maine Portland Club activities into her eighties.

Bill and Anna found great pleasure in building a ski camp at Sugarloaf Mountain, and then discovered a wonderful cottage in South Harpswell.  These enabled them to stay active and to share their love of skiing and being on the water with their daughters and grandchildren.  Later, when Bill was diagnosed with cancer, they moved to a cozy house in Sun City, Arizona for winters, giving them new friends and activities.

Several years after Bill’s death (1985), Anna married a skiing friend of theirs, Bob DeMunn.   They enjoyed Sun City and Harpswell together for many years. When the trip to Arizona became difficult, they moved into a lovely condo in Falmouth.  Bob died in 2010.

Anna’s late years have been a wonderful model for staying engaged and active as we age. Her writing, which she began in Sun City, has been an on-going gift to us all.  We can’t remember a time when she wasn’t working on a chapter of “Anna’s Story,” lovely, detailed chronicles about her life.  As Anna’s friends declined in later years, she would read to them from her recorded memories of their shared experiences.

Friends over the years meant a great deal to Anna.  There was the Travel Club, in which Bill and Anna’s neighbors and friends gathered to talk about where they would like to go but probably never would.  Later, some of the women made annual trips to interesting historical and natural sites around New England, often camping.  And in recent years, Anna has invited their daughters to “Come for pie!”  As she lost her dear old friends, she made new ones in her Applegate neighborhood.  They provided love and support right to the end.

Ledgeview Assisted Living in Cumberland Foreside was her home in the last few years,

and she couldn’t have been in a better place.  Owners David and Karen Landa and staff kept her safe, comfortable and engaged.  She especially enjoyed the exercise and music activities, and the wonderful food!   We will forever be grateful to our friends at Ledgeview for their loving care of Anna.

The family also appreciates the services provided by Northern Light Hospice, so important and helpful as Anna declined.

Anna will be dearly missed by her four daughters and their families: Margaret (Peg) Davey & Tom Zanzig, Carolyn (Cally) & Bob Moore, Jane & Owen Carney and Barbara & Ron Arsenault and her nine grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.

When the time seems safe and right, we will gather at the cottage to celebrate Anna’s life.  In the meantime, remembering Anna we invite you to make a contribution to an organization in your community that is providing food to those in great need during this pandemic.  We know that would have warmed her heart!

Emma Marie Lauderback Johnson

Emma Marie Lauderback Johnson

Knoxville, TN and Phippsburg, ME - Emma Marie Lauderback Johnson, age 99 of Knoxville, TN, passed peacefully on October 21st, 2020 surrounded by loved ones at her son's home in Phippsburg, Maine. “Marie” was born June 2, 1921 in Inman, SC to Aaron and Bessie Parks Williams.

She was proceeded in death by her parents; brothers Marion O. Williams, Willie P. Williams, Sr. and Walter Lee Williams Sr.

Marie is survived by her son Charles Odel Lauderback Sr.; granddaughter Kristina Marie Lauderback and grandson Charles Odel Lauderback II, all of Maine; sister-in-law Barbara M. Williams; nephews Dr. Walter Lee Williams, Jr., Victor Williams, Michael Williams and Willie P. Williams, Jr.; and niece Lynne Williams, all of Knoxville.

She was employed by Drs. Williamson and Muse as a nurse for over fifty years until her retirement. Aside from her work, she loved caring for her flowerbeds and reading.

We would be remiss by not acknowledging a true friend and companion to the family for the last three and one-half years. That person is Stephanie McClintock, a trained CNA. Marie would affectionally refer to Steph as the “bag lady.” Steph would spend hours daily providing the care that Marie needed. They would laugh, watch television, make fun of everyone and ate whatever candy was available. As the end neared, Steph spent every day by Marie’s side until she passed. God bless you Steph.

In addition, Marie’s granddaughter, Kris, stepped up to the plate to help her grandma transition. Her loving care was invaluable.

While dementia stole her personality, there were times when her sense of humor broke through to show the “Marie” we all loved and will miss deeply. Rest in peace “Marie” with your mother at Berry Highland South, Knoxville.

Viviane G. Fotter

Viviane G. Fotter

Viviane G. Fotter

1930-2020  Benton

“I have fought a good fight. I have finished my course. I have kept the faith.”

Viviane G. Fotter,  God’s special servant with the most amazing, generous and loving heart, finally came to rest on December 10th and was called home to be forevermore and pain free into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Viviane was born in Waterville, the daughter of Emelia and Ernest Gagnon, and was gifted in drawing and crafts at a young age.  She would display them in her home for all to see especially at Christmas for many years.

In her teenage years at Waterville High School she excelled at the violin and in her later years would give the violin to a special granddaughter, Danielle, who would play jigs and reels for her at her home in Belgrade Lakes.  In 1948 she married the love of her life, Perham L. Fotter and they were married for 54 years until his passing in 2002.  During those years they raised six sons.  Mom and Dad both worked at Diamond International in Oakland for many years and even with very limited wages and much sacrifice, the boys never went without. Everyone who knew Mom, knew that she was the strongest woman they had ever known. She worked non stop her whole life. At a very young age she developed Rheumatoid Arthritis which seriously affected her body the rest of her life. Despite years of countless surgeries, hospital visits and rehab she never complained of her illness and always was more concerned about her family than herself.

Viviane had some bucket list wishes while living with her son Stephen and his wife Linda during the last five months of her life.  The wish she wanted the most was to ride a horse for the first time. Her wish was granted, spearheaded by her special grandson Joseph Fotter who was with her the entire ride.  A beautiful article was written in this newspaper by reporter and personal friend Amy Calder about her very special day.

Viviane was pre-deceased by her husband Perham L. Fotter, two sons Phillip E. Fotter and Gerald L. Fotter who recently passed away from complications due to Covid -19; sisters Martha Pelham,Edwina Bolduc, Eva Hubert, Pearl Frost, Ernestine Parisi and brother Edward Gagnon.

She is survived by her son Bruce Fotter and wife Betty of Warsaw IN, daughter-in-law Rose Marie Fotter of Belgrade Lakes, sons  Stephen Fotter and wife Linda of Benton, Peter Fotter and wife Tammy of Rome, and James Fotter and wife Karen of Gray.  Fourteen  grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.

The family would like to say a very special thank you to Hospice care workers who provided wonderful care and support for Mom these last six months. Also thank you to Dawn, a hospice CNA who became close to Mom and provided the best care she could have. Also thanks to care helpers Betty Michaud and Amy Burns.

A graveside service will be held in the spring with Rev. Bill Meyers officiating. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Funeral Alternatives.  In lieu of flowers donations can be made to ShineOnCass Foundation, 64 Heritage Rd., Oakland ME 04963.

Karole Lynne Johnson

Karole Lynne Johnson

Karole Lynne Johnson, 66, of CAPE ELIZABETH, ME, died peacefully on Thursday, December 3rd 2020, at Maine Medical Center surrounded by her family.

The youngest of four children, she was born on March 31st 1954, to her loving parents Carolyn Johnson (Peterson) and Gordon Johnson in Caribou, Maine.  She grew up in the small town of Westmanland, Maine in Aroostook County on the Johnson family farm.  She would attend Caribou High School and graduated from the University of Southern Maine with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1976.

After just a short time working in nursing, Karole realized her true passion in life: helping those suffering with mental illness.  She believed the worst type of pain was those suffering from mental distress and wanted to do whatever it took to help anyone who was in pain.

Karole began her career in healthcare in Southern Maine before moving to Washington D.C. to work at Georgetown University Hospital.  After a few years in our nation’s capital, she returned to Aroostook County to work in mental health in Caribou, ME.  Here, she would meet her future husband, Stephen Malenfant, a fellow nurse after he built up the courage to ask her out.

The couple would eventually move to Texas so Karole could obtain her Master’s degree in Nursing from the University of Texas at El Paso in 1986 before returning to Maine.  They would start a family in Portland, Maine, giving birth to two sons, Caleb and Micah.  Karole was a beacon of the North Deering community of Portland for decades as she raised her boys while helping to improve the mental wellness of the Greater Portland area.

She embodied exactly what a nurse is: a superhero on earth.

The majority of Karole’s nursing career was spent as a nurse manager in the P6 unit at Maine Medical Center and at Spring Harbor Hospital.  She met many colleagues throughout the years that also became close friends.  Her peers were always attracted to her unconditional calm, kind, and caring demeanor.  She met so many wonderful healthcare workers through her work and kept in close contact with many of them throughout the years.

In her final years before retirement, Karole served as Director and Associate Chief of Nursing at Spring Harbor Hospital in Westbrook, ME before serving as the Senior Director of Behavior Health Services at Southern Maine Health Care (SMHC). Some of her final projects included supervising Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) teams across the Maine Behavioral Healthcare system, managing the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) at SMHC, and leading early design work for the new inpatient behavioral health units in Sanford, ME.

She had recently retired and was enjoying her new found open schedule to the fullest.

Her greatest joy in life was being a mother.  Everything she did in life was for her family.  Along with her husband, Stephen, she was dedicated to building a beautiful home for their family and friends to enjoy.  They worked tirelessly on their old, iconic farmhouse in Portland, Maine to keep it a pillar of the North Dering neighborhood that so many cherished.  Unfortunately, Stephen passed away unexpectedly in 2012.  Karole was a rock for her family and sons during the difficult time after his passing.  In the past few years, she was blessed to meet her significant other, Ron, with whom she shared many exciting adventures.

She loved lakes, ponds, the ocean, and all things to do with water.  She could spend all day swimming, kayaking, and just lounging around in floats with friends and family.  Even in the early spring and late fall, when the water wasn’t particularly warm, she’d exclaim, “it’s great to be alive in the north woods of Maine” in an attempt to encourage others to join her in the chilly water.

Karole is survived by her beloved mother, Carolyn Johnson, of Topsham, ME, two sons, Caleb and Micah Malenfant, of Saco, ME, sister, Rebecca Johnson and her husband David Plourde, of Concord, NH, brother, Retired Admiral Gregory Johnson and his wife Carol Hancock, of Casco/Harpswell, ME, partner Ron Hiser, of Damariscotta, ME, as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends she would consider family.

Karole’s passion of helping others lives on in her two sons who continue her work in the field of healthcare.  Caleb works in the field of disability insurance and Micah is a Doctor of Nursing Practice at her former employer, Maine Behavioral Healthcare

An outdoor celebration of life service will be held at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in her and Stephen’s honor.  All funds contributed to the memorial will go toward a public granite bench in their names and a scholarship fund in their honor for aspiring nurses.  For more information and to contribute, please visit the following website link:  www.gofund.me/9fddf3f3

Audrey Gertrude Mabel Bradbury

Audrey Gertrude Mabel Bradbury

Audrey Gertrude Mabel Jones Bradbury peacefully passed away at home December 5th, surrounded by family. Born 1936 in Penmon, Wales, Audrey was first and foremost proud to be Welsh. More than anything, Audrey loved to tell stories of the land of daffodils, poetry and music. A rich history of family love and spiritedness coursed through her veins. As such, while she loved her life in America, she always had “hiraeth” (Welsh “longing”) tugging at her heart. Although she lived here for over 60 years, her green card said it all.

At age 21, she married SSgt Mahlon “Brad” Bradbury, whom she met on a blind date when he was stationed in England. During their 23 years in the Air Force, they raised three children, made life-long friends and saw a bit of the world. Puerto Rico was her favorite assignment. Eventually settling in Brunswick, Audrey worked a few jobs, grew beautiful flowers, enjoyed being a “Nain” (Welsh grandmother) and kept close ties with her family across the pond, with regular visits to her homeland.

Exceptionally charming and loving, Audrey made friends everywhere she went and had the gift of making each person she met feel special. Besides being known as a beloved friend, she was also known as “the card lady” for her 18 year career at the former Brunswick Navy Exchange. Perhaps Audrey’s most famous role was as “the cake lady,” where we feel certain she baked at least 3,842 pound and Christmas cakes across her life for all her friends.

Some of the many traditions she leaves us with include pulling Christmas crackers, celebrating Boxing Day, buying daffodils on St. David’s Day, planting snowdrops, dancing the YMCA without restraint, singing, whistling, growing flowers and tossing peas.

Audrey is survived by her son Joseph Bradbury and wife Cynthia, daughter Susan Maxwell and husband Greg, daughter Joanne Pardue, grandchildren John (Jessica) and Annie (Dustin), and great grandchildren Evelyn, Ethan, Zoey and Audrey. With family on both sides of the Atlantic, she leaves behind sisters Iris Gadd and Sheila de Silva, sisters-in-law Elizabeth Wagner, Norma Albee and Judy Hooper, treasured nieces and nephews and countless friends, most especially her best friend Margaret Sutherland, and her furry companion Iris. Audrey was predeceased by her husband, Mahlon F. Bradbury, sister Nora Jones and brothers Stanley Jones and Gordon Hartley.

Her family appreciates Dr. Gullo’s honest and kind care and the loving support provided by CHANS Hospice, especially Joey-Lynne, RN and Lacey, MSW. Alas, mom was blessed to be surrounded by thoughtful and helpful neighbors during her life in Brunswick. Therefore, we will forever be grateful to the Labbes, the Caldens, and Karen Giustra for always looking out for mom.

A Celebration of Life is postponed. However, you are invited to visit  www.funeralalternatives.net  to learn more about her life or to share your own thoughts.

In lieu of flowers, Audrey hoped for donations to be made to Centre Street Congregational Church, UCC, 9 Center Street, PO Box 265, Machias, ME 04654.

Griffith M. Jones

Griffith M. Jones

Griffith M. Jones Jr died peacefully at home in Bath November 27th after a period of declining health.

Griff was born in 1930 in Manhattan, the 3rd of 4 children of Griffith M Jones and Dorathea Jones (nee Fullagher).  Soon after his birth, the Jones family moved to Stamford, CT, which, with the exception of a few years on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, would be the family home base from then on.   Griff played football at Stamford high school.

After high school he joined the Navy.  In a spur-of-the-moment bid to avoid an unpleasant work assignment, he took the officer candidate examination and ended up being appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis where he also played football until sidelined by a knee injury.
He served in the Korean conflict in a Bath-built ship, USS Ernest G Small and narrowly avoided being blown-up when the vessel struck a mine during the naval bombardment of Hungnam.

Naval politics and bureaucracy didn't suit Griff and he returned to civilian life in Connecticut, earning a degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Connecticut in 1956.   At UConn, Griff was active in Theta Xi fraternity and remained in touch with several of his fraternity brothers for the rest of their lives.

After UConn, Griff settled in the Boston area where he worked as an Engineer at MIT Lincoln Labs, working on the cold war SAGE air defense system, taking graduate courses in his spare time.  He described this as one of the best times of his working career.  Over time, he worked for a number of technology companies in the route 128 corridor including Bell Labs, Signetics, and Veeder Root, first as a design engineer, and later as a sales engineer.

In the early 60's Griff met his wife, and the love of his life, Joanna Ewing.   The couple met at The Sevens pub on Beacon Hill: a place they frequented with a circle of friends that they remained close to for over 50 years.  In wooing Joanna, Griff pretended to enjoy jazz, folk music and dancing.  Joanna saw through this but managed to overlook it.   The couple married, settled in Marblehead, MA, and started a family (Not necessarily in that order). There they enjoyed skiing, sailing, and socializing at Maddie's Sail Loft.

By the early 70's Griff tired of working for others and decided to become his own boss.  After exploring several options, he started a successful NAPA auto parts store in Leominster MA.   He sold the Massachusetts store and moved to Bath in 1977, seeking a place that was closer to both the ocean and to skiing.   He started and operated Bath Auto Supply for over 30 years, stubbornly refusing to retire until he sold the business in 2007.  His grandsons fondly remember visiting the store as children: he always had hats and stickers and toy NAPA trucks for them.

After retirement, Griff returned to his lifelong love of learning, digging into economics and mathematics, taking online courses and reading extensively.  Griff became health-conscious in his later years, working out regularly at the Bath YMCA, where he made several close friends (some of whom shared his strong conservative political leanings, and some of whom just enjoyed arguing with him).  He was a strong Trump supporter, but allowed, towards the end of his life, that while Trump had good policy ideas, possibly he had some faults as well.

Griff is survived by his wife Joanna, his three sons Darrick, Channing, and Chris, his daughters in law, Melissa, Amy, and Suzanne, seven grandchildren, and his younger sister Ina.   He was predeceased by his sisters Judy and Dottie.

He pursued careers in both, spending 3 years as a minor league umpire after high school and the most recent 20+ years as a highly regarded chef in the Mt. Washington Valley area. He also worked for several years in between as an HVAC technician at General Reinsurance in Stamford. Dennis was a natural mentor, encouraging his nieces, nephews, interns and coworkers toward their career goals in the food service industry or whatever pathway they pursued. He would light up any room with his humorous expressions and he loved to keep everyone well fed.

Albert Sylvain

Albert Sylvain

Albert Sylvain, 97, of Auburn passed away on Monday 11/23/2020 at Clover Healthcare Nursing unit in Auburn Maine. His health had been declining since the Covid-19 pandemic and had recently been receiving extra care from the Androscoggin Hospice Health staff. The good Lord called Al home on November 23, 2020 he died a peaceful death.

Al was born on February 24, 1923 in Connors New Brunswick, Canada the son of the late George and Gertrude (Oakes) Sylvain when he was still a young baby the family moved to Maine where his mother was born. For many years after grammar school he worked in the woods with his Dad cutting and hauling timber until the time that he was drafted as World war 11 was breaking out. He served in the Air Force and was stationed in Biloxi Mississippi and while there Al served as a cook for the troops and was eventually promoted to the rank of Staff Sargent and was nicknamed 'Cookie' which he found somewhat amusing as it was also the same name the loggers had called him when he worked in the woods and from time to time would have to step in as cook for the logging crew when needed. One of the most memorable highlights of his life was having gone to Washington D.C. with the Maine Honor Flight as a WWI 1 Veteran.

During one of Al's Military leaves he met the love of his life Lucia Eva Bannister of Lewiston, and on Feb 25 of 1943 they were married. They would go on to raise two children, a daughter, and a year later a son. They were parishioners of St. Joseph's church in Lewiston and as the children grew they attend St. Joseph's school. When the kids were still in school Al, with some local neighborhood dads on there time off built a skating ring across the street from Al's home on Elliott Avenue in Lewiston which also featured side boards around the rink for the hockey games that would be soon be played there also built a, warm-up snack shack, where the neighborhood kids could warm up, ice skate and the hockey enthusiastic neighborhood boys would have a place to play hockey, that was the start of the first Elliott Ave hockey club in Lewiston. Competition games would be played among hockey clubs throughout different parts of the city. Al and some of the other dads would be out late at night flooding the rink with garden hoses getting the ice ready for the next day when kids and families from all around would come for the fun entertainment and watch the hockey clubs compete when games where scheduled. Al and Reggie Masse didn't miss any hockey games, they were both there not missing a game coaching the boys that played on Elliott's 1St hockey team. Good times were had by all as the precious seasons came and went. That one one of Al's fondest memories.

For many years Al was employed at Delar Manufacturing Inc in Lewiston assembling aluminum windows and doors including various installations Al decided to start a small repair business. Still working full time at Delar Inc. he started working part time nights and weekends out of his home on Elliott Avenue and went by Alco Repair Service doing glass, screen and home repairs and eventually started contracting work from Delar Inc. installing windows doors for Delar and began selling home improvement products from the family home. In a few short time sales and work grew and the family home had become to small. Al needed a larger place to operate his business so he bought a building on upper Main Street in Lewiston, and started the move fromhis home on Elliott Avenue to his new location on upper Main Street and changed the name to Alco Aluminum Products of Lewiston. In short years, with the help of his son he would turn his new business location into a full blown thriving successful home Improvement center Al's wife Lou, who for years had been employed at a local shoe shop in Auburn gave her notice to help with the growing family business by taking over the office work. It wasn't long before sales and installations eventually expanded throughout much of the state of Maine.

As business grew in proportion and remained stable. Some thing else was on the horizon.

Al and his son both having experience in food especially an all time favorite, from scratch, hand made, Italian pizza, and also being a family favorite, with the overweening approve from family, the work was on to build a Pizza shop directly across from the home improvement center and located on the same plot of land they would work on days off, nights, and weekends, and we preceded to build the pizza shop as time went on we hired other construction specialist as needed. When it finally opened it we named the new shop Krissy's Pizza and featured all the usual pizza shop goodies.

It was a well received by upper Main street businesses and folks from all around. It also capturing a portion of the Main street harness race drivers and fans. It was a new venture and started off with family stepping in to help. It turned out to be a neighborhood hit.

Actually it was feeling more like an entertainment break, after completing a hard day's work at Alco Aluminum Products.

Al was a hard worker, and cherished his family and home by the lake at Barnard Cove in Greene he loved hanging out with his family especially his grandchildren they were special. the most precious times in Al's life were spent with his grandchildren. He would spent as much time as possible with his loving family especially his grandchildren whom he so much enjoyed being with. There were loving, fun times, something exciting all year long. Summer outside cookouts were unmatched it didn't matter if it was grampy's famous Pizza right out of his hot pizza oven, or a smoky watering juicy roast beef cooked over, a barbecue fired smokey spits, from Bucky's General Store, in Greene, or a yummy fresh lobster pick right out from our families lobster tank at Misty's Swap shop, also located at the Greene IGA Plaza and cooked to perfection for everyone to enjoy.

The most special enjoyable times were when Al's daughter Lori Hampton and husband Dan and children would come from Vermont.

These particular times were Al's unforgettable Highlights in his eyes his look when he was around any of his grandchildren would bring out the very best of a loving granddad.

Al was a good loving dad always looking out for his family.

He was a quiet man but a very good listener. He had an inviting smile and a gentle heart. He enjoyed listening to old time western music and enjoyed playing music on instruments he collected. He could dance all night and especially enjoyed square and polka dancing. In his later years he learned to paint on canvas and wood. His art will be treasured by those with whom he shared. His sense of humor, his laughter and his calming nature will forever be missed.

Al was pre deceased by his wife, Lucia Eva Bannister, who died on Sept 17, 1985, two brothers, Wilfred, and Edmond 'Shorty' Sylvain and a sister Stella Labbe and his granddaughter Maureen.

He is survived by his daughter, Lorette Hampton and her husband Dan of Hartland Vermont and his son Albert R 'Bert' Sylvain of Lewiston. His grandchildren Shanna, Misty, Patrick, Carl, Butch, Valerie, Danny, Kristine, and Marc

He is also survived by his present wife Helen (Morin) Sylvain and her children and grandchildren. He also leaves several grandchildren, great grand children, great great grand children and nieces and nephews and Joline and Jerry Silva and their children who he was especially close to.
