Kathy Waller

Date of Death: September 15, 2011

Date of Birth: August 16, 1944

Biography:

Kathy Waller, a well-known and loved Hallowell antiques dealer, died Thursday, Sept. 15 at the Androscoggin Hospice House in Auburn after an extended illness.

Kathy was born in Augusta Aug. 16, 1944 the daughter of Paul and Eldena Williams Jones. She was predeceased by her husband, Albert Waller, her parents, and her sister, Patricia Gagne.

A resident of Hallowell most of her life, Kathy loved and supported her community and the people in it. Her home was a gathering place for friends spanning generations. Her door was always open and her bright smile was always the greeting, followed by “What can I get you?”

Kathy loved life and loved people, especially those in her hometown. She was a friend to those needing a friend and included them in her family. Her lifelong kindness to people is remembered by all who knew and treasured her friendship. She was an active member of the Hallowell Bowling Team and was a volunteer and supporter of numerous Hallowell events through the years. She loved music and she loved her flower gardens.

Kathy, her husband, Al, and her aunt, Ginny Diplock, worked side by side on Water street in Hallowell for over 25 years. Her store, Acme Antiques, was an eclectic shop that attracted people from miles around and Kathy and Al added to the atmosphere with their own brand of warmth and fun. Acme was one of the few high spots on Water street and during floods it was a gathering place for shop owners and others keeping their eyes on the river. She is remembered fondly in the flea market and antiques trade. For several years Kathy also enjoyed working in the Special Education Program at Hall-Dale Elementary school.

She is survived by her son, Paul Waller of San Antonio, Tx., and son and daughter-in-law, Andrew and Kara Waller of Whitefield; seven grandchildren, McGuire, Kathlyn, Kaleb, Gavin, Jenna, Matthew, and Grace; and her brother and sister-in-law Bryant and Linda Cooper Jones of Manchester.

Kathy regretted that she was unable to extend what she would consider a proper thank-you to her many friends who had shown her great support during her illness. A celebration of her life is scheduled from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 25 at Slate’s Restaurant, Water street in Hallowell. In lieu of flowers, Kathy asked that donations in her memory be made to Hallowell’s Food Bank.
