Joseph "Mac" McCarthy

Biography:

LEWISTON — Joe-Mac, 80, died peacefully Sunday, Feb. 27, at d’Youville Pavilion, after a brief stay.

He was born in Caribou, the eldest son of Elwood Foye and Ethel McCarthy. In April 1952, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the Korean conflict. Shortly after enlisting, Joe married Gloria DeGruttla on May 17, 1952, who sadly passed away in January 2009.

Joe was a lifetime member of the Lewiston Elks Lodge 371. Over the years, he was very instrumental in helping the lodge with lobster feeds and Casino Nights. In 2010, Joe was awarded the Lifetime Volunteer Award by the Lewiston Elks Lodge.

He is survived by his only child, Janice Hornstein of California; two beautiful grandchildren, Aaron and Kailee Hornstein; son-in-law, Roy Hornstein; a loving brother, Ronald (Grace) McCarthy; sisters-in-law, Angelina (Romeo) Boisvert, Theresa (Robert) Hunsicker and Lucille (Robert) Delorme; as well as several nieces, nephews and friends. Joe also leaves behind his special and caring friend, Tim Flynn.

Besides his parents and wife, Joe was predeceased by a brother, Robert.

The family wishes to extend gratitude to Dr. Ken Brodsky and Chris for there many years of care, as well as Linda Blanchard of d’Youville Pavilion for making Joe’s final hours peaceful and comfortable.

A service of remembrance and celebration of Joe’s life will take place in late spring. Notice will be given of the time and place.
