Biography:

Sandra “Sandy” Lee Mateer, 65, of Leeds, Maine passed away on August 6th, 2016 at home with her daughters holding her hands and her beloved dog Zoe by her side. She was born on April, 9th 1951 in Arlington Virginia to parents Thomas Fenwick and Joan Harrie (Strother) Adams.

Sandy loved animals, and also loved to dance and enjoyed ceramics. She especially loved to spend time with her family. Her Christmas cookies and peanut butter balls were loved by many, and she would mail them out at Christmas time to loved ones.

She worked as a project manager until her medical retirement, when she became and enjoyed being a mom-mom to her grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, James Walter Smith; her parents and grandparents; and an infant great grandson, John Brett Ewing.

Surviving Sandy are her daughters, Lisa and her husband Brett Ewing of Wales, Maine, and Rebecca and her husband Shawn Deitrick of Clayton, NC; a sister, Conisue and her husband Bill Crawford of Pasadena, MD; a brother, Daniel Adams and his companion Karen Burkhardt of Mechanicsville, MD; her grandchildren, Paul Ewing and his wife Erika Runnels of CA, Phillip Ewing of NJ, Peter Ewing of ME, Patricia Guyette and her husband Mark of ME, Ashlee Ewing of NC, Jamey Deitrick, and Jorden Deitrick of NC;  her nieces Megan and her husband Ed Rodriguez of, MD, Joanna Matthews of MD, and Kristen Matthews and her fiancé Mario Cruz of NY; great grand-daughters, Jasmine and Isabella Ewing of CA; a great nephew, Lucas Rodriguez of MD; and her special friends, Lisa Denison, Lucille (Gram) Bauer, Springrock residents, and her fairy godmother, Maureen Siglow.

“All that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother”- Abraham Lincoln.

In accordance with Sandy’s wishes, she will be laid to rest at sea, and services will be held privately for her family and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Androscoggin Homecare and Hospice Grieving Children’s Program, 15 Strawberry Ave., Lewiston Maine 04240, or to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 11454 Alexandria, VA  22312.
