Alexander Hutcheon

Date of Death: February 3, 2010

Date of Birth: June 5, 1931

Biography:

Falmouth, ME- Alexander Hutcheon passed away peacefully on February 3, 2010 at his home after a valiant 22-year battle with multiple myeloma.  He was born June 5, 1931 in Providence, Rhode Island, the son of William and Marie Hutcheon.  Al graduated from the University of Rhode Island with a degree in engineering.  Following graduation, he went on to serve in the U.S. Army in Frankfurt, Germany.  Self-taught, he was fluent in many languages including German. While serving in Germany, he met the love of his life, Marianne, and they married in 1956.

Mr. Hutcheon put his brilliant mind to work as a structural engineer, working several years for Mobil Oil Corporation before moving his family to Falmouth, Maine.  It was then that he opened Alexander Hutcheon, Associate Engineers in Portland where he did the structural design for many of the large municipal buildings we see in the state today. Later in his career he would spend more of his time as an expert witness and insurance consultant. He was well-respected by his colleagues as well as the contractors, architects and attorneys with whom he worked.  He closed his Portland office in 2005, but continued to work part-time until December 2009.

Among friends, family and co-workers, Al was always recognized as a man with a great depth of knowledge, insight, patience, honesty and compassion. He proved that with hard work, perseverance, and creativity one can achieve his goals. He was as quick with his mind as he was with his sense of humor and will sadly be missed.

He is survived by his wife, Marianne of  Falmouth;  daughter, Christa Hutcheon O’Meara of Palm Beach Shores, FL; son, Dr. Alex Hutcheon and his wife Liz, and grandchildren Matthew and Sarah Hutcheon all of Falmouth.  He is also survived by his brother, William Hutcheon of Westerly, RI.  He was predeceased by his parents as well as his sisters, Barbara Schoenemann and Ann Hurley.

The family would like to thank Dr. Hedlund and Nurse Ethel, Dr. Martin and his staff, as well as the staff of VNA Home Hospice for their kind care during his recent illness and over the many years.  At Al’s request there will be no services or visiting hours.  In lieu of flowers, friends may make a donation to the charitable organization of their choice.
