Sally J. Hawkes

Date of Death: June 22, 2014

Date of Birth: April 13, 1937

Biography:

FREEPORT – Sally Joanne Hawkes, 78, of Freeport passed away surrounded by her family on Monday, June 22, 2015 at 8:35am at Midcoast Hospital in Brunswick.

Sally was born in Belfast, Maine to Granville and Evelyn (Toothaker) Mayo and her older brother Timothy on April 13, 1937. She grew up in South Freeport, where she was known to steal lobsters from people's pots. At Freeport High School she played Basketball, was on the swim team and carried the marching band banners until she graduated in 1955. She then moved to Boston where she married her high school sweetheart, Thomas Hawkes, in 1956. They moved back to Maine and put everything they had into building their home on the Webster Road in Freeport. They started their little family in 1957 with the birth of their son Thomas Granville Hawkes, followed two years later by their daughter, Terry Sue, in 1959.

Sally worked as the Branch Manager at Brunswick Savings Bank in the 1970's until the mid 80's. She then became a permanent fixture at the Freeport General Store, known as Maggie's by the locals until March of this year. She was a very special person and remembered everyone who came into the store. She was always a hard worker and faithful employee to Elaine Polakewich before taking over as manager in the early 90's.

She was a loving, devoted Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Sister & Aunt and was happiest when she was with her family. She took great pleasure in hanging out at Half Moon Pond with her extended family and the Chocolate Bear, or hosting her annual Christmas Eve party. She was an avid golfer who was always up for a game with all her "golfer buddies." She once got her name in the newspaper for getting a hole in one at the Val Halla Golf Course and loved to travel to Myrtle Beach to play. She enjoyed travelling to Boston, Las Vegas, and Florida and in 2011 took a trip to London & Paris. She was a very devoted Boston Celtics fan. She really enjoyed walking and wine, and was known for driving around with her FrePutt license plate, a play on both golfing and the town of Freeport.

Sally is predeceased by her parents Granville and Evelyn Mayo, her son Thomas Granville Hawkes, and her beloved dog, Banker.

Sally is survived by her daughter Terry Sue Allen and her husband Russell; granddaughter Heather (Hawkes) Kristan, her husband Johann and their children Zachary and Zarah; grandson Matthew Allen, his wife Lynn (Wallace) and their daughter Madison; granddaughter Autumn (Hawkes) Vargo and her husband Timothy; granddaughter Morgan Allen and her fiancé Brian Hodgman; granddaughter Sarah Hawkes; granddaughter Melody Hawkes and her children Kenny, Kedrick, and Kamaja. She is also survived by her OLDER brother Timothy Mayo and his wife Christine (Arris) and their children Cindy, Timothy, Penny, and Pam; and many great nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her very good friend Shirley Meservey and her husband Dick.

As per her wishes a family Celebration of Life will take place on Sunday, June 28, 2015 from 1:00-4:00pm at 939 Elmwood Road.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimer's Association at 383 US Route 1 #2C, Scarborough, ME 04074, or the Lyme Disease Association, INC. at PO Box 1438, Jackson, NJ 08527.
